L12 Mod quirks

Have my trusty 1700 here. JIUHB, DLT3C and what what.

Closed the third L12 bridge on the chip which should set it to default 166 FSB right?

L12 > . : | : | - Stock 1700
L12 > . : | | | - L12 Mod 1700

Right? Right. What gives eh?

Booted my nf7-s, read it as a 200MHz default. WTF. Furthermore, my quirky nf7-s which is the master of the two-tone siren would not run more than 30 seconds with the chip L12 modded. So I undid the mod, slapped the chip back in, then it took 90 seconds for it to two-tone on me. On the upside, the board booted at 230, ran for 5 minutes. Went to 240, ran for another five minutes...Then it started doing it. So I took the board out, slapped it in a box.

Installed my new NF7-S which can't be older than the 24th of July (Came stock with the 7/24 BIOS, and a metal CPU lock). It's flying right along at 222 out of the box, no ****ing siren, and I love it.

//EDIT: L12 modded chip in. Can you say 240 at 2/3/3?

Which BIOS version are you using Thrax? Before BIOS 18, 166 FSB chips were sometimes detected as 200 FSB ones. BIOSes 17 had siren fixes.

My NF7-S shipped with BIOS 16, and I get the siren if I enable the shutdown option in the PC Health BIOS screen. I've tried 18 and 19, but they don't seem to like my Corsair sticks (no siren though).

The link below has all the BIOS readme changes listed.

Newest bios on both boards. Corsair works fine (Even with all three channels populated with 2 x 256 and 1 x 512 at 240 in my new board).

The siren fix did not apply to me, as it does not work. It is a different undocumented siren, and it sounds much different from the the ACTUAL two-tone siren that IS documented. Regardless, this siren problem seems to be exhibited in boards purchased prior to the summer months, but not in all of them. As it stands, both shutdown and warning are disabled in the BIOS. The BIOS is configured properly. The shutdowns are random, as is the siren. The max is FSB 211 and proc maxes at 2.32 even though it's running fine at 2.4 in my new board.

So screw my old NF7-S, it's hardware-related problems. It can go in another box where overclocking need only stop at 211 x 11.

My july-or-later NF7-S rocks. It's what my first NF7-S should have been.

    Thrax,

I had the same **** when i first did the L12. I couldn´t understand what it was until i flashed to Bios 10 and all of a sudden it booted at 166. Haven´t flashed back to newer after that so i can´t tell if it stays. However, 200 or 166 by default DO NOT make a difference in the overclocking ability AFAIK.

Did you notice the difference i told that you would?

I´m happy for you buddy, have fun!

So does the L12 mod itself increase OCing performance? How?

I'll be ordering an SLK 947u on Sunday, so I'll be back to pushing to new limits.

That Areoflow, while being a fine cooler, is not much of an OCing cooler.

Does get me to 2Ghz stable, though.

    SmJ,

The L12 mod lets the fsb be pushed beyond imagination and this is a chipset "limitation" if you can call it that. No matter which bios on NF2, the L12 is the only way to get past 215-220 aggresive.

You can do the mod on the bridges or the pins on the cpu or use the socketholes or underneath the mainboard.

It wont get you more mhz, just the ability to increase the memory bandwidth and that´s all i´m interested in. Anybody can get a 3 gig chip if you got the money but getting memory bandwidth is tougher. I rather have a system with 2 gigs and 3600 mb/s memory bandwidth than a 2,5 gig with just 3000 mb/s memory bandwidth.

    I understand. Thanks Mac!

Right now I'm more worried about getting past an FSB of 200 w/o heating the cpu past my limit.

Hey Thrax, if you modded the bridges themselves, did you get some conductive paint locally, or did you order it online?

My local auto parts store doesn't carry the stuff anymore.

I got the last conductive trace pen at Microcenter down here on 14 mile off I-75.
