Help with repeating error messages at shut down, downloading updates etc.

Could use some help from the experts on this one. My computer is giving several error messages when I shut it down. I also get an alert with an exclamation mark saying "downloading updates" in my bottom left icons that always stays at 0%. Now I am not able to restore my active desktop. I had the same problem awhile back and you guys helped me fix it so I would really appreciate the help again! Thanks so much!

I have followed all the steps in the 'read this before posting a hijack this log' forum and my panda active scan and hijack this are below. I also ran Bitdefender as well which came back with no viruses.

Thanks again!

    Hi Skosha and welcome to Short-Media. I'm checking your log, so please be patient.
  • edited March 2007
    :)Hi skosha

    We Have to move Hijackthis to it's own folder because In it's current location, we'll lose both the program and the backups it creates.
    These backups are important in case we need to restore any 'fixed' entry(s) later

    Click START>My Computer >right click Local Disk (usually (C:) for most people)>Explore.
    Right click an open area in the main panel.
    Select New > Folder.
    Type in HJT & press Enter

    Now We have Created C:\HJT\ folder. Put your HijackThis.exe there.
    Now Rename HijackThis.exe to scanner.exe and send new HijackThis log.

    :D Hi skosha

    Please download
    VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

    * Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
    * Click the Scan for Vundo button.
    * Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
    * You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
    * Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
    * When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
    * Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

    Important note -- It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

    hi peku, I ran the vundo fix and no infected files were found. I ran another hijack this log in case you still needed a new one and this is below. I did notice that I have an old Vundo Backup folder from when I had this problem before that had items in it that all say BAD file. These are:

    jlmoq.bak1.bad
    jlmoq.ini.bad
    yxwvw.ini.bad
    yxwvw.bak1.bad
    jlmoq.bak2.bad
    Should I delete those?
    Thanks again for the help!

  • edited April 2007
    Hi Peku, thanks for checking my logs. I had some issues with the instructions though. I used hijackthis to delete the file you told me to. Then I tried to delete the other files you asked me to and out of these files C:\WINDOWS\system32\iv4.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\xktfzxm.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\modsock.dll
    I was only able to delete the iv4.dll. xktfzxm.dll was not there and the modsock said the file was in use.

    I pasted the text into notepad but your instructions didn't really tell me what to do with it after that so I just saved it.

    I ran rougeremover and nothing was found so no logfile was created.

    Then you instructed me to reboot in safe mode and run panda active scan, but my internet does not work in safe mode for me to access. So either I am reading something wrong or something is missing from the instructions. But anyways, I did what I could and my new logs are below. Thanks again!!

    Complete scanning result of "modsock.dll", processed in VirusTotal at 04/09/2007 22:28:36 (CET).

    Save the file to the desktop as fix.reg and make sure the "Save as Type" field says "All Files".
    Then please go to the desktop and double-click on fix.reg, and click Yes to merge it with the registry

    You also have an old Smitfraudfix program on the Desktop, delete it.

    Please Download SDFix and save it to your desktop.
    Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following
    Restart your computer
    After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
    Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
    Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
    Choose your usual account.
    In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract All,
    Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
    Type Y to begin the script.
    It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
    Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
    Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
    When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
    Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum

    :)Hi skosha,

    If you have an old Smitfraudfix program on the Desktop, delete it.

    Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
    Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe.
    Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
    Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
    **If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.
    Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

    http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm

    Please, post Smitfradufix report to your next reply.:)

    :smiles: Hi skosha

    Please download killbox to your desktop
    Unzip it to your desktop.
    Run Killbox.exe
    -> Choose Delete on Reboot
    -> Click All Files option.
    Copy the following lines to your clipboard (choose text with your mouse, press CTRL+C or copy)

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\xktfzxm.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\modsock.dll

    Then go back to Killbox
    -> go to File
    -> choose Paste from Clipboard
    -> Click the red-white Delete File option.
    -> Click Yes to Delete on Reboot question
    -> Click OK to any PendingFileRenameOperations requests (and tell me if you get any of these!)
    -> Restart your computer if Killbox won't do it.
    (If you get this error when running Killbox: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid.", download Missingfilessetup.exe form here to your desktop and run the file, then try running killbox ->

    * Double-click on Dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
    * The scan may take a minute. When the scan is complete, a text file will open - Main.txt and extra.txt

    Post fresh main.txt :wink:

    VirusTotal is a free service offered by Hispasec Sistemas. There are no guarantees about the availability and continuity of this service. Although the detection rate afforded by the use of multiple antivirus engines is far superior to that offered by just one product, these results DO NOT guarantee the harmlessness of a file. Currently, there is not any solution that offers a 100% effectiveness rate for detecting viruses and malware.

    Turn on System Restore.
    On the Desktop, right-click My Computer
    Click Properties
    Click the System Restore tab
    Uncheck Turn off System Restore
    Click Apply, and then click OK

    Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure

    The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.

    Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
    AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
    SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
    SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
    IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
    CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
    Windows Updates- It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
    Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
    Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
    To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klei
    Happy surfing and stay clean!;)
