What to Do When Patriot Missiles Fail... A Laser Cannon??

edited October 2003 in Science & Tech
In 1996, the US tested a chemical laser on a missile and it worked. However, the funding has been reduced in past years. Israel wants more research on the Nautilus anti-rocket laser to defend its northern boarders.

[blockquote] The Nautilus uses a high power radar to track and lock onto the incoming projectile. Then a Mid-Infrared Advanced Chemical Laser (MIRACL), which looks like a large spotlight, shoots out an intense beam that destroys the rocket. [/blockquote]

The article also mentions a right angle rifle...

"What if free people could live secure in the knowledge ... that we could intercept and destroy strategic ballistic missiles before they reached our own soil...?"

Although it would probably cost billions of dollars to implement, the thought of eliminating most conventional WMD, ICBM & SLBM's through a space-borne defense system is very intriguing.
