Looking at a desktop is one thing, try to load Photoshop and have mediaplayer running and see...no. I mean wait. Make sure to put the kettle on.

    I ran Windows "Whistler" Beta 2416 on a Pentium 233 MMX with 96 MB's of PC66 SDRAM for a while. :)

For word processing, spreadsheets, internet, e-mail & instant messaging, it worked fine, espcially considering I was using a beta of Office XP Professional. :)

The only time the thing ever chugged was just after it started up and it was loading all the services. A quick trip to the Services MMC applet and disabling a few services made the system faster. :)

XP is a vast improvement over 95/98/Me on any system. :D

I loaded XP on a tower that only had 64 megs sdram, and it ran like molasses.

The wierd thing is, my Page File usage (thanks to taskmanager) is only 97mb, wheras my Desktop is 266mb, what is better?, lower or higher?

oh and what services should i disable? i want it as fast as possible, i only use it for email, internet, WordProcessing, printing stuff, and listening and view alittle media on the net, this laptop is mainly for my uncle, i dont use it much

As standard the paging file will be a third more larger than your actual physical memory size. So 97MB is just right for a system with 64MB of ram. I have 1GIG of physical RAM, if I let Windows have its way, I have about 1.5GIG of pagefile allocation.

I would leave it as it is.

EDIT: What I meant to say was, your physical ram should be 2/3 of your paging file size, which makes your paging file size 1.5x your physical memory size.

hmmm I set my page file to 2GB, think if I lower it to 1.5 or even 1GB I would see performance gains? I also set min and max to the same value.

I was running a Japanese version of XP on a machine with a P150 and 64Mb RAM, whilst on placement for uni. It would take *no bull* about a week or so to process 1 folding wu.

I have no paging file most of the time, I only add some, when I want to run applications like Photoshop which requires paging file.

Paging file = 768 MB Min & Max on the fastest physical hard disk I have.

    1.5x System RAM.

Simguy is correct. With 1024mb+ of ram, it doesnt matter if you use 500 or 1 gig as a swapfile as the applications generally wont use any swap. With 512, swapfile is constantly in use. More in XP than 2K actually.

Croc, according to tweaksites and my own testing, you gain a little with 1,5 times the ram if you use under 768mb. As long as the filled ram in your system can fit into the swapfile and a little more (on the safe side), you are allright.

Sorry for borking the original explanation up. Just listen to Simguy, he know best.:) :buck:

I don't now, as I no longer have contact with the company I was at (they were in Germany and the Jap machine was for localisation).

To be honest I never really had a problem using it unless there was a problem, as I was familiar with the Windows interface & what all the icons mean. It does actually give you some appreciation for Windows, being able to use foreign language versions too!!

The keyboard was the worst thing - soooo confusing with about 4 symbols per button!!

I may see if I can get a friend to take a screeny for me & email it. So watch this space...

I can't believe my friend. He has 1.5gb of DDR in his rig.

Doesn't even use it all, and refuses to give it up. :)
