Security logging

A friend of a client (no, it's not me, this is on the up and up) copied some private company information to a flash drive, now has thought better of it. So, my client is asking me, can her company trace the event?

I just copied something to my flash drive and find no logging of it in Event Viewer or anywhere in the registry. Am I missing something? And aren't there add-ins some IT departments tack on just to track this sort of event?

There are no logs are far as I know, as I could just open the file in Word etc.. and save to the flash drive...

If they have USB locking software in place then they can be notified when someone tries to operate a flash drive on the system.

There is Audit ability on 2K & 2K3 servers, but I don't know if it records files opened or copied I think it's just for logins... Never used it...

The movies keep the "fear factor" up, as there they can tell which bit on the ether packet caused the 50 server network across 3 satellite links to reboot a maintenance terminal so someone could steal data... :)

Yea and I saw Joe Pesci kill a guy twice his size with his own ball point pen in Casino. I didn't buy that either.

Yea this was just from laptop to flash drive. I'm not helping her do anything illegal here, just telling a client how how much his friend has to worry about.
