If you have ever owned an Asus product, chances are that you have visited their site to download an updated driver or to receive technical support. Visitors over the weekend found themselves exposed to a hack which took advantage of a Windows vulnerability which allowed them to be redirected to a site which would attempt to download malware onto their computer.

Experienced Internet users know that visiting sites with an unhealthy reputation is a risk. Typically, this includes many "warez" sites and other places where the user invites an attack on their computer by engaging in shady behavior to begin with. Hang out with crooks and you are bound to get punked sooner or later.

What one doesn't expect, however, is to be at risk when visiting an established website operated by one of the big players in the computer hardware industry.

It shows once again that it is never safe to let your guard down. A case of the flu could come just as easily from shaking hands with a business associate as it could from bumping into a stranger on the street. Your next computer virus may be delivered by someone you trust - be ready.

That's scary. Even experienced internet users could get caught with this one very easily. The last thing a person expects is to get nailed on a reputable site, so even when they see a questionable redirect it tends to be dismissed.

There was a malicious hacking of Wordpress's download package a bit ago as well. :-/ I had to replace my installation on one site.
