Google has launched a new feature of Google Maps that enable users to create their own customized maps. Users have the option to make them public or keep them unlisted. Unlisted maps are intended for personal use and can be shared with friends and family via e-mail.

Users who have created their own maps can store them online using their Google account. The new feature allows you to mark locations on a map using a whole assortment of icons, highlight paths and areas on the map, incorporate HTML as well as add text, photos or videos from Google or YouTube.

Google expects that the maps made by private users will enrich the whole Google Maps and Earth experience by adding diverse and interesting content about the world as seen and experienced by the users themselves.

At the moment the maps are available in 10 countries and can be accessed via the My Maps tag on the Google Maps homepage.
