M2N SLI Deluxe Soundmax Sound Problem

 Hi, I'm an "old newbie" who recently completed my first homebuilt machine:
Asus M2N SLI Deluxe with Athlon 64 X2 3800
2 GB Kensington DDR2 800MHz RAM
2 Western Digital 250GB SATAII H/D
eVGA GeForce 7300 GT
Burner, reader, floppy
XP Pro

In almost all aspects, the system has run faultlessly. It booted right out of the box, and has been fast and stable. My only complaint is that the NVidia Soundmax system will only output stereo sound. I've tried selecting quadraphonic, 5.1, and 7.1; reinstalled the latest drivers from the Asus web site; repeatedly disconnected and reconnected the speakers; and checked the connections with the SoundMax Audio Wizard software. The software detects the connection, so I believe that the cabling is correct, and if I swap speakers, the new speakers work. The audio wizard software detects all four speakers, but in test function the noise only comes out the front speakers, as does music. I've received no response from the Asus support forum. Can anyone suggest what I might be missing?

Thanks in advance!
