New optical CPU 1000 times faster than regular processors

edited October 2003 in Science & Tech
The Israeli company Lenslet has developed the world's first commercially available vector DSP with an embedded optical core.

[blockquote]The EnLight is a fixed-point processor comprised of three elements: a Vector Matrix Multiplier (VMM) capable of performing vector-matrix operations at a rate of up to 8000 Giga MAC operations per second; a Vector Processor Unit (VPU) capable of performing 128 Giga operations per second and an industry standard DSP (TI TMS320C64xx) for control and scalar processing (SPU). The EnLight256™ could be used either as a system-embedded accelerator or a standalone processor for computational intensive types of applications.
[/blockquote]
[blockquote]This optical processor was developed over the past three years by the highest caliber of researchers, scientists and engineers supported by a group of renowned international professors from the realms of optics, physics and signal processing. Lenslet's optical processor offers a combined solution of optics and silicon in the format of a standard electronic board card with standard interfaces and development tools as generally accepted in the industry. MATLAB APL bit exact simulator.. These tools were developed to ensure a smooth development path starting with floating point MATLAB algorithm development, through fixed-point EnLight optimized algorithm to running and debugging code on EnLight.

That is awesome.. awesome awesome for DSP's! Fully integrated with matlab and (hopefully) compatible in time with apps like xilinx

Yes but how fast does it fold?

    DogSoldier had this to say
Yes but how fast does it fold?

I think thats the main question on everyone's mind here.

well seeing as the topic says "...1000 times faster..." my guess would be its about ... somewhere near .... the vicinity of .... 1000 times faster than a normal processor :P

Grrr Matlab. Dumb picky program. Prolly more useful if the teacher taught it.

I would like it better for the VAB boards with DSP chips at DeVry. Might make them faster and able to sample at higher freq.
