Have you attempted to overclock the Opteron? How high did it clock? What voltages were needed? Did you use any heatsink/fan other than stock?

How old/used is the motherboard? I heard that there are a lot of bad reviews on that motherboard, have you had any problems with yours? What sort of stuff has the motherboard gone through (change of heatsink mount, disconnecting and reconnecting components, etc)?

@a2jfreak - I never OC'ed the Opteron. I never bothered to learn how to overclock the Athlon64 platform so it has always been at stock speeds. Yes, i've used a Thermalright XP-90 the entire time.

@AlphaTrinity - Where did you hear bad things about the A8N-SLI Premium? It is a fantastic board, I have never had any problems with it at all. It hasn't gone through much wear and tear since I've had it. When I bought it new I put a Thermalright XP-90 on there when I had a 3200+, then I switched to the Opteron 165 and have been running that until now (when I removed the mobo/cpu). The only other upgrade was a 6800GT to 7800GT very early on. The A8N-SLI Premium is recommend by ViperLair, t-break, PCStats, TrustedReviews.com, etc. (top results from a google search).

Nope, I actually bought a the Thermalright "LGA775 RM" Retention Bracket for about $8 which allowed me to use the XP-90 on my Core 2 Duo.
