hot router

edited May 2007 in Science & Tech
hmm router over heat. i think i have this problem without an over clock... my router and dsl modem are on a shelf by their selves a 18 inch by 48 inch shelf about 5 and a half feet from the floor and the router is sometimes dang hot to the touch...

during the spring.. when its been in the 80's in my area my room gets pretty warm.. high 80's to 90's is that too warm.. do i need to go to dollar store and get a mini box fan to set up there??? and i tried that hack and no increase for me unless i did it wrong.. and i updated the firmware right before i did it...

my singal is not stable either it ranges from -25 to -45 db from 11 feet away line of sight.. with a parabolic antenna from techanvil(dot)com it did a better stronger single the day i bought it and turned it on for the first time......

I have a stock gateway mx6453 with intel pro wireless and broadcom wireless. and netstumbler running at same time for the scan

and when i move 15 feet away. through a wall it drops to a -36 to -50db range

sorry if im too technical. :smiles:

I burnt up my first WMB54G music bridge in one day when I stacked my VoIP router on top of it.....at least I think that might be what cooked it. They were both very hot. I swapped it for a new one an never stacked them again so I'm not sure but the point is, when you say the router and DSL modem are on a shelf are they stacked?

I'm not sure those -25 to -40 db are that bad....unless you're saying it fluctuates that much all the time. If so, I think you're on to something with your heat theory.

You made the same post here 30 minutes ago. Don't spam...

All I can say is make sure router is well ventilated. Put it out in the open if you can.

Can't say for sure, but I've worked with a lot of routers and I can't say that I've thought any of them were hot to the touch. Unless you tell me you're dropping a lot or can't get a signal all over the house, I'm not sure you have a problem. I'm sitting in my back yard as I type, just downloaded a 60 Gig file and netstumbler shows my sig/noise as -64 db. I don't think I have a problem.

I'm still outside and my -64 signal/noise varies by about 5 db....all the time. If I go inside I'll have about -35 db and that will vary by 5 or 10 db...all the time. Radio signals are funny.
