svchost 100% CPU :(

Hi

Been working on trying to fix a work mates Laptop: Acer Travelmate 2420

I've run AVG, spybot, Adware in safe mode and have only come up with tracking cookies but as soon as you boot up into normal windows the svchost.exe use's up all of the CPU and grinds the Laptop to a halt. It's going out of the window soon :p

Heres the HJL:

    Carl,

Is this new in the last couple days? If so, check out this thread. A lot of people have had those same exact symptoms due to a bulky Windows update this week.

Yes it has only just started to do this.

ok I'll have a read through the suggested fixes and let you know if it works. That is once I get hold of the Laptop again. Some body decided it would be a good idea to take it to a repair company :) "FORMAT"

The "fix" will not reduce SVCHOST from grabbing 100% but it does seem to lower the priority level so the computer will not stall while it scans. I noticed that before the "fix" SVCHOST would almost kill the system while taking 100% CPU. After the fix, it still took 100% but it would allow other processes to jump in and the system never stalled.

Ah so will we all be expecting a fix that does sort this out eventually? Or has microsoft decide they've done enough :) Cheers for your help. Will be going to pick the laptop up in a bit and then will give it ago.

Cheers guys ever in my area I'll buy you a pint :)

Microsoft is trying to fix the problem. It effects more than just the casual user, it also effects one of it's corporate level services WUS (Windows Update Service). WUS is what many companies use to patch all of there systems from within their environment instead of having everyone go to Microsoft's update site. MS will fix the problem. Companies will not accept a hit to performance nor will they allow update scans to take as this long.

As I understand it this is the fix. And in my case when I finally just walked away for an hour and let srvchost have it's way with my lappy, I had updates waiting and all was forgiven.
