On my Motherboard (APG slot missing)

edited June 2007 in Hardware
On my motherboard i have (second hand), there is meant to be an APG slot next to the PCI buses. On the motherboard it looks like someone has ripped out the brown slot where you usually put the AGP card and there are just 2 holes left. Is it possible to buy another AGP connector and put it back on?

On the contrary, it is more likely that the motherboard's PCB is a standard model the mfgr. uses throughout that series of products. Your motherboard is the model that does not feature an AGP slot.

This is very common on old and/or cheap motherboards.

So to answer your question: No.

You don't understand.. My motherboard is the model with the agp slot excpet it has been removed for some reason. It has the correct spot and has the holes where u can plug the socket in..

If the AGP port was ripped out, there would be 70-100 metal wires hanging out from the motherboard.

The answer, unfortunately, is still no.

    Thrax is right.

If your slot had actually been torn out, the motherboard would no longer function, so either it was very carefully removed with specialised tool (which would still probably cause the board to stop working) or you don't actually have the model that comes with that slot.

Either way, attaching a new AGP slot would require the work of a specialist, and it would most certainly be cheaper to buy a new motherboard than to pay for the labor associated with soldering on an AGP slot, even if it would work.

Your board was definitely not supposed to have AGP. Your motherboard arrived that way from the factory; those are manufacturer solder points.

Oh ya, as thrax said on this one, you are sadly out of luck. Those little dots would be little wires if someone just pulled the AGP slot out of the MoBo, and as was said, your MoBo probably wouldn't work anyway.

What socket CPU are you using? perhaps we can help point you in the direction of a motherboard worth something good for cheap. If you don't know the socket, just give your specs, we'll figure out the socket.

    Have a good one

Isnt there video cards that fit in the PCI slot? and also what is a PCI-e video card

Yes, you can get PCI video cards, but they would not be as fast, and you might notice it in the performance. PCI-e is PCI-express which is a new standard expansion slot type. Your board does not support PCI-e.

Basically the board layout was designed to have an AGP slot but the manufacture decided not to implement it, probably to cut costs.

As CB said the board you have does not have PCI-E slot and you would have to upgrade your entire system to get it.

I'm not fully sure, but if my memory serves me correct PCI video cards usually only fill the bottom of the line cards, and even then haven't been made since the X1300's and Nvidias 6200 cards. Here is a link to some PCI cards but I don't recommend their use. I would start looking at a mobo upgrade if I were you.

I have a similar mobo, my pc is a dell dimension 2400 and because i dont have a high knolledge of upgrading a computer i was wondering if there were any mobo upgrades you could suggest.

    thanks

CPUID.com. Get CPUZ. That will tell you everything possible about your motherboard and connected devices IF they're detected by Panopsys.

Actually, SiSoft Sandra's motherboard tool or BelArc Advisor may be better for this.

i tried downloading the sisoft software it didnt work it said that the place its trying to download it from cant be found, i then tried the BelArc Advisor this time it did work, it says that my motherboard is a Dell Computer Corp. 0G1548 A00

I have been curious about that myself, I mean the solder points are there, how much extra cost is it to put the damned AGP slot on it!? Not that I would ever use one of their cheapo motherboards, but I have wondered if soldering you own contacts on with the AGP slot and likely a new BIOS would solve this issue.... probably be easier and almost as cheap to buy a cheapo MB with an AGP slot but it's just my curiosity.:p

Hmm. You know I've never thought of just soldering in an AGP port. I got a friend with a Celeron from HP that has the pinout for the AGP. Wonder if he'll let me do it.

    Soldering it on won't help.

Intel sells northbridge's without agp interfaces for substantiation less to oem's.
(At least with the 845 series).

It would be fun to try it, but I do doubt that it would work. You need to get a new mobo chief.

Yeah I killed my friend's motherboard. If it doesn't have an AGP port soldered on, it doesn't have the ability to use it.

I've still got friends on machines under 2ghz and using SD100 with AGP4x using Gforce 2's and lamer crap. I'm doing my best, because I'm tired of them wanting to stay over here so they can play on my gear when I'm trying to work.

So, With the ability to build computers up for under 300 dollars, It's a good act of charity and it feels good to help out the lame/jobless since all they do is play MMO's anyway.
