Grrr...Windows.....

edited May 2007 in Science & Tech
Hello all!

I am stumped. I have Win XP installed and am having issues. For some reason, after it boots, I can't seem to open any programs. I might get Outlook or IE to open once but that is it. I can't even get into the task manager to see what is going on. I have a memory manager and it shows that I have at least 600 MB free at any given time. Any time I try to launch an app, I get an hour glass for about 5 seconds, then nothing. I booted into safe mode and everything seems fine, I can open apps, run scans which I did and found nothing suspicious. But when I go back to normal mode, I still have the same issue. Any thoughts? I would put this in the security/spyware forum, but I think I have ruled that out. HJT seems OK and no viruses or spyware that I can find, then again, that is in safe mode.

What should I do? :confused::confused::confused:

    Can you post a screenshot of your active processes from Task Manager->Process tab?

    Also what is in your Startup folder?

    I can't even get task manager to open. As far my startup folder, I have Disk Trix, AVG, Free Ram XP, windows messenger, and even when I disable all of these things, I still have an issue. Not sure if it matters or not, but I installed Linux on a seperate partition on the same drive (what I am using now). I have reinstalled windows three times and along with these issues, I now have three instances of XP to choose from when I boot. I have completely eliminated all traces of the first two and have run fixmbr and fixboot from the recovery console and that doesn't seem to help. Maybe I should just scrap that whole partition and start over?

    You should forget windows and stick to Linux. I left Winblows a while ago and I never looked back. In Linux I have everything I had in Windoze and much more. I left a system that wants to control the market, the computer and you, that is full of virii and spyware, that is always late with the updates, that is full of security holes. Think about it. The Terminal in Linux is the most powerful instrument found in a computer, period.

    Did you follow the steps outlined in this thread, powertowerz?

    Try this stuff before you go re-formatting everything.

    Well, after trying a few things, Windows is up and running. After running as many utilities as I could think of, I finally found something in HJT that when removed, asked me to send the author an email about what I did to remove their hijacker. Bawlz man... bawlz.....

    Anyway, I am dual booting happily now, things are good, and I have gotten a good crash course in doing this kind of thing so hopefully I can help someone in the future.

    Thanks for all of the help!
