I had the same thing happen with glitches in on-board sound a year ago on one of my systems and installed this sound card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829120103

It works well and gives a fine sound which is really enhanced if you can use its optical output.

sorry to steal your thread, but i didn't see the point in making another.

I am also in need of a soundcard too, but seeing as gnome started the thread I want to make sure he gets his soundcard first. I need a PCI card, something that will get me better sound than onboard.

    I'll chime in for a detail -

Make sure you guys get something of Audigy class or better. Onboard sound these days is better than it used to be, and the onboard sound on my AsRock 939Dual-SATA2 (which people say is "bad") is noticably better than the sound from a Soundblaster Live. Winamp DirectSound plugin shows that the onboard has a better frequency response than the Live, too.

I have a couple Soundblaster Lives laying around, so on a whim I thought I'd install one. I'll be removing it next time I'm in the case.
