Firewall Settings?

edited May 2007 in Science & Tech
Hello Short-Media Forums,

I was surfing the net, and got one problem fixed using the advice on this site, and was hoping you could help me with my other problems.

I have two pc's (one work and one for family) and one macintosh. Currently my only my (old) imac is the only computer connecting to the internet.

My work pc actually opened a window yet I get the error page. I clicked on "diagnose connection problems" and I get the message "Windows cannot connect to the internet using HTTP, HTTPS, or FTP. this is probably caused by firewall settings on this computer. Check the firewall settings for the HTTP port (80). HTTPS port (443) and FTP ort (21).

Please let me know how to check my firewall settings. I have not added any virus protection lately, and did not change any settings. The icon for the wireless connection says "Status: connected, Speed 11.0Mbps, Signal Strength: Excellent"

My family computer does not even have a bar below where it normally shows the "start" icon etc... on the bottom of the screen, it's just a thin strip of white. And when I clicked on the "e" to start explorer, the computer flashes for a second to the internet, and then goes back to my desktop. I ran adaware and caught 39 viruses, and restarted my computer, but the computer still looks the same, and will not show me any icons on the bottom, and will not allow me to sign onto the internet!

I would appreciate some help wading through these problems!

Sorry no one's gotten to this sfditusa. I was out of town a couple days.

Pretty uninformative message eh? What sort of security do you have on this? Zone Alarm? Symantec Internet Security? Some McAfee thing?

If this is XP, go to Start> Run... and type "cmd /k ipconfig /all" without the quotation marks. Then hit enter, you'll get a black window. Scroll to the connection you are using and tell me:
    1. DHCP enabled?
    2. IP address
    3. Default Gateway
    4. DNS servers

That's just a good start and doesn't tell you a whole lot. Let me know what the settings above are.

Adaware catches spyware, many of them will just be cookies. The problems you're describing sound a lot like some rootkit kind of trojan thing got in there.
    1. You need to do a virus scan. I'm hoping you have some updated anti-virus on this computer and can do a true virus scan...not just a spayware scan.
    2. After scanning and cleaning with anti-firus, I would go over to the Spyware & Virus forum and post a HiJackThis log. Let them see what they can find.
