Is it possible to softmod my Radeon 9500 (non-pro) into a 9800?

edited June 2006 in Hardware
Hello, i'm sort of new to this whole softmodding thing and I was wondering, is it possible to turn Radeon 9500 into a Radeon 9800 (pro if possible)? And if so, could someone please provide a link to a step-by-tep guide? Any at all help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Theoretically it would be if you have a very very very very new revision of the Radeon 9500 (not likely) with 2.8 - 3.3ns memory. But since they're no longer made I would venture to say that the core is incapable of reaching 9800 speeds (As it uses an OLD revision of the 9700 core) and just barely reaches the 310MHz necessary for 9700 Pro memory.

You may want to check them out on Resellerratings.com.

Most of what I saw didn't paint a pretty picture of their buisness practices. Buyer beware!!!

Why does it have to be so cheap? Grrrr I had no plans on buying a new vid card for awhile but this seems too good to be true.

Yikes. I have a brother who knows a painter who has an uncle who was working in Nigeria and knew the Finance Minister, who unfortunately died mysteriously leaving behind a $19billion bank account nobody knows about. Want to help them claim it? I think the chances of success are only marginally less than ordering from this place from the looks of the comments on RR.

You can't physically turn a "9500" into the "9800" as the 9800 is a different core revision than the 9500/9700 series. The R350 has changes to its SmartShader support and HyperZ enhancements that allow it to perform more efficiently than the 9500/9700 series.

You can soft-mod that 9500 to a 9700 VIA Omega's Catalyst Drivers or the "Radeon 9500 Soft-Mod" thread in this forum, but that's provided that the 4 disabled pipelines on the 9500 are still intact and working error free.

Since it's a Sapphire card, it is BIOS unlocked and you can freely overclock the card. When combined with the soft-mod and an overclock, the card can and will perform just like a 9700 Pro for 50% of the price. ;)

However, be warned that even if your 9500 is built upon the 9700 PCB, it doesn't guaruntee the possibility of successfully completing the softmod. Chances are 1 in 3 that you'll get a card that soft-mods correctly.

I was thinking about useing this softmod program rather than the one given on this site. Which one do you reccomend?

Yes I read the resellerratings. The reason I am not buying...as well as I dont really need a better Video card.

Dodger, the guide written on this site is based off of the OCFAQ softmod, but it's done the manual way for people who like to have sole control over the driver installation process -vs- the automatic packages available (IE Omega & the Automatic OCFAQ Installer).

200fps on COD2?????? with a 9700 pro???? who, what, where, how, when, why???

please provide screen shots and system specs. I can't believe this unless I see this....

a 7800GS gets 45-53fps on max settings on 1280 x 1024. and 137fps on low settings with everthing special turned off.

I see DX 7.. but still 200fps I just can't believe Dx7 runs that much faster with that card. I mean Dx7 doesn't have all the high end stuff so technically your card is like uber high end for DX7...
