Dell to sell Linux to the masses? Later today, Dell is set to begin selling three systems with Ubuntu Linux pre-installed. According to information on Dell's official blog, the systems will start at $599 for the E520n desktop and E1505n notebook, and $899 for the XPS 410n. Comparatively, the similar Windows Vista loaded systems cost $369, $699 and $899. So why does the cheapest Ubuntu desktop carry a $230 premium? It's a valid question considering Linux is supposed to be free. In the company's blog, Dell notes that hardware support will be handled by Dell. In turn, Dell will develop new and better Linux drivers. One can only assume the price premium will be used to pay for development? More information regarding Dell's usage of closed source drivers can be found here. As it stands now, the only deal for the consumer is a $100 discount on the laptop.

They also announced today that they'll begin selling computers at WalMart and Sam's Club. So you can buy bloated crapware in bulk and save!
