worm virus -- please help!!!!!

Hi --

My problems started last night when I foolishly downloaded a midi to mp3 converted from the internet. AVG and Norton both popped up to say I had a virus (Worm VB CC??) but said they couldn't access the file to delete it. My computer still worked ok, but this morning when I turned it on, it was very slow, there is no sound, and Yahoo Jukebox won't play. I have finals coming up and a final project to complete in Movie Maker, so I would greatly appreciate any help. I ran Hijack This, Kapersky, and Bit Defender (not sure if I got the report right for this, although it said there was one file it couldn't delete and that my computer was still infected).

Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

Thank you so much for replying back. I am at work right now and don't have access to my home computer, but I will be following these steps as soon as I get home and will reply back.

    Thanks again!!!!

    Hi again --

I was able to complete all the steps (I haven't restarted my computer since I uninstalled Mysearch since that has seemed to make my computer worse; I guess I am supposed to restart before it is really uninstalled? Also, it wouldn't delete Mywebsearch from C://Program Files -- it said access denied. Here is my log . . .

    Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    :)Hi whittaker18
    Good Work!
dont worry if you cant delete the folder,,,
    Please do the following

Please print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page.

    step#1
Open your Norton Antivirus And Emtpy It's Quarantine Folder.

    step#2
Please download DrWeb-CureIt & save it to your desktop DO NOT perform a scan yet

    step#3
Now let's show all hidden files.
    Open Windows Explorer.
    Click on Tools.
    Click on Folder Options
    Click on View.
Select Show hidden files and folders
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files and the Hide extensions for know file types boxes.

    step#4
Reboot your computer in "SAFE MODE" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

    step#5
try that again: Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete these folders (if present):
    C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch

Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete these files (if present):
    C:\Program Files\Uninstall My Web Search.dll

    step#6
    Scan with DrWeb-CureIt as follows:
    * Double-click on drweb-cureit.exe to start the program. An "Express Scan of your PC" notice will appear.
    * Under "Start the Express Scan Now", Click "OK" to start. This is a short scan that will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the Yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it.
    * Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
    * Choose the "Scan tab" and UNcheck "Heuristic analysis"
    * Back at the main window, click "Select drives" (a red dot will show which drives have been chosen)
    * Then click the "Start/Stop Scanning" button (green arrow on the right) and the scan will start.
    * When done, a message will be displayed at the bottom advising if any viruses were found.
    * Click "Yes to all" if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
    * When the scan has finished, look if you can see the icon next to the files found. If so, click it, then click the next icon right below and select "Move incurable".
(This will move it to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if it can't be cured)
    * Next, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list.
    * Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
    * Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
    * Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
    * After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report)

    step#7
    Open HijackThis
    - Click the Do a system scan and save a log file button

    step#8
Post these Logfiles in your next reply:
    a new HijackThis log
    DrWeb.cvs report

Thank you so much again for writing me back. My computer is working so much better, and I have sound again! Yeah :) While I was on my computer last night, though, AVG popped up with a virus alert in the C://Sound Volume. I clicked heal, but the new scan this morning said there were still viruses in the Sound Volume (the volume icon is still missing from the toolbar at the bottom of my computer but I have gotten sound using the quick keys). There were some "incurable" viruses so I did move them. Here is what my log reports say. Thank you again so much.

    :)Hi whittaker18
    Good Work!
    Your comp looks clean.

    Clean your System Restore:
    Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
    Watch what you download!
Many freeware programs, and P2P programs like Grokster, Imesh, Kazaa and others are amongst the most notorious, come with an enormous amount of bundled spyware that will eat system resources, slow down your system, clash with other installed software, or just plain crash your browser or even Windows itself. If you insist on using a P2P program, please read This Article written by Mike Healan of Spywareinfo.com fame. It is an updated and comprehensive article that gives in-depth detail about which P2P programs are "safe" to use.
Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klei
    Happy surfing and stay clean!

For step #1, when I go to Properties, it is all grayed out. How would I go about getting access to this? Thanks!!!! :)

You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

To find out more information about How use System Restore
  • edited May 2007
Well, I used the instructions to do the system restart and tried restoring my computer to last Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, but everytime, my computer restarted and ended with the message, system cannot be restored to that date. I am listed as the computer administrator for my computer and I am the only user, so I don't really get it, but oh well.

Thank you again so much for all of your help, and I will definitely be using all the spyware tools you gave in the future!!!!

    Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
