Patch or crossover cable?

From my dsl modem, I have it hooked up to my 4 port router, I got an 8 port switch to extend my network now. I am going to uplink from my router to a port on the switch to tie it into my network. Do I use a patch cable or a crossover cable from the router to the switch? I don't have any laying around to test, so before I go to office depot tommorow I need to know which to buy.

Any help would be great guys.

You're safe getting a crossover cable. If you get a patch cable and the switch has an "uplink" port or is capable of automatically detecting which type of cable it is (forget what the technical term for that is), then it would do just fine. But a crossover cable will connect two regular ports on the router and switch and they'll work together.

Ditto what EMT said. Even if you do have the uplink port, it's almost certainly shared with one of the regular ports (i.e. you can only use one or the other); the uplink port just does the crossover wiring for you internally.
The crossover cable has got you covered either way - just plug it into a standard port. :thumbup

    PC - PC = Crossover
    PC - Hub = Straight
    Hub - Hub = Crossover
Hub - Hub Uplink = Stright
    PC - Switch = Any
    Switch - Hub = Any
    Switch - Switch = Any

    Therefore - Switches = Own

Thanks guys, your the best. The switch doesn't have an uplink port, but all 8 ports automatically detect an uplink, so I should be fine. Thanks once again.

Most people who say that they have a hub actually have a switch, as most of the consumer hubs sold these days are auto-sensing switching hubs. Makes it easier for the user, no messing with crossovers or confusing port 8 and the uplink port.
