Starting XP Pro in safe mode

I can't find out how to get windows to start in safe mode. I have tried F8 on startup but this gives me a select boot device option !! Any ideas.

    Wait until after the bios gets done loading. Right between the "bios load" and before windows starts loading, mash the F8 key.

    It's all about timing. Adjust your timing and you'll "find" it.
