Mac OS X 'Panther' erases some hard drives

edited November 2003 in Science & Tech
It has been reported that a problem with the new Mac OS X operating system 'Panther', in certain instances, can cause some users to lose data stored on their external hard drives. The glitch is said to be limited to drives that use a high-speed FireWire connection and a specific chipset from Oxford Semiconductor manufacturers. Apple wisely recommends users who think they might be affected by this glitch, to disconnect their drives when upgrading to the new OS.

[blockquote]Apple has identified an issue with external FireWire hard drives using the Oxford 922 bridge chipset with firmware version 1.02 that can result in the loss of data stored on the disk drive," the company said in a statement provided to CNET News.com. "Apple is working with Oxford Semiconductor and affected drive manufacturers to resolve this issue, which resides in the Oxford 922 chipset.[/blockquote]

Sure! Look how quickly, easily, and intuitively Panther formats hard disks! Detecting the install of a new operating system, it wipes the disk just as good computer practices dictate. :D
