Laptop CPU stuck in full speed mode

For some reason my laptop stays at 1.66GHz (mobile AMD Athlon XP2000+). It is supposed to go down to 915MHz when doing nothing more than surfing the net or office stuff.

However, my room is fairly cool, and the CPU fan isn't on like it usually is at 1.67GHz

But, even at 100% charge, when I disconnect AC power, it says I have 3h 45m left of charge, so I think Windows is just forgetting to show the actual speed

What do I do to get it back into speedstep mode? I might have disabled it in the BIOS by accident

From what I've read, speedstep is controlled in the bios, so go check if you disabled it ;)

No option for it in the BIOS.

When did it suddenly start doing this? Did you install something? Have you changed anything? There may be something locking the CPU at high usage so it doesnt bother clocking itself down.

I'm not sure, it seemed to do it after I set the UMA memory for the video chipset to use 64MB and I installed Medal of Honor, Sim City 4 and all the WinXP updates.

    Are you running F@H perhaps?

On a laptop? haha, crash and burn.
    But I highly doubt it.

I have been running F@H on my laptop 24/7 for a year with no problems. It is just a lowly P3-450 though.

If he is running it, that would at least explain his problem. :)

Dan: Is this when the laptop is plugged into the mains, unplugged or all the time? As they still automatically go back to full speed when plugged in on most laptops.

You need a better tool for displaying the CPU's clockspeed than Windows' software.

Ok, I unplugged it, I will see if it changes any.

Nope, it stays in full speed mode while running on the battery.
