KT7A-Raid 1.0 What's the best CPU it can handle?

edited October 2004 in Hardware
I have a KT7A-Raid, I bought it right after it came out so it must be a 1.0 and not one of the later revisions. I know it won't take the xp processors. Will it take any thunderbird? The highest thunderbird I saw on ebay was a 1.4ghz. Is that best cpu this old motherboard can handle?

I THINK that you can get a 1800 and 1700 XP to run on them, i know that it doesnt support the XPs but i believe that a former member of the original Icrontic [Fang] ran an XP on it. You can always lower the multiplyer if it doesnt support a higher one. Whats the highest multi it displays in the bios?

I've got a XP 1700 or 1800 (can't remember) running in my KT7 non "A" board. Never a hickup and cooler than a T-bird. You will be able to run it at clock speed with a 133 bus.

Are you sure you have a 1.0 and not a later revision? I thought only later revisions of the board could run the XP processors.

This is not even an "A" board but the precursor to it. I tell ya, I've been around for awhile. :D 100 Mhz FSB only. This board was out before they built 133Mhz processors. I have only heard of one KT7 board that would not run an XP and that guy was suspect.

Fading memory is coming back. I have a 1700 XP in here right now. I had a 1600 which ran into a Fredy Kruger hatchet and refused to take the abuse. I now know how they are built. :)When I went to replace it, 1600 were no longer available and had to use a 1700. I believe all 1700 XP are factory unlocked. At least mine is.

The Abit deal is, any KT7 board before KT7A ver. 1.3 the XP's are not "Officially" supported.

Thanks for the info, a 1700 XP sounds nice.

You'll just have to try a palomino or Tbred. My old KT7A-R v1.1 ran just fine with a Tbred 1700+

Hey I run across this thread while google searching... basically I have the same question as this guy. Of course it has been a year later and some new CPU's are out now.

I still have 1GHz in my KT133A, I want the best upgrade I can get.

I also found this page where this guy says 2100+ should work?

    http://mysite.verizon.net/res0exft/Fastcpu.htm

Of course he haven't update in a while so i search some more...

I check Anandtech and he says Athlon XP 2800 should work?

"If you've been following any of our Socket-A motherboard reviews over the past year you'll know that quite a few motherboards have no problem running at a 166MHz FSB frequency, so owners of older motherboards should have no problem upgrading even if the faster FSB isn't "officially" supported."

A new friend (and a magnificent human being) just gave me boxes of his old stuff which included a KT7A v.1.1 M'Board among a LOT of other goodies to play with. His old toys are my new ones & I'm having great fun... sort of.
I don't know much about the details of AMD processors or old ABIT boards so I have been on the info super highway...

Here are some things I found that might help the next person:

"The CPU supporting chart of ABIT mainboards"
    http://www.aideonline.com/faq/fichiers/abit/abit.htm

    "Why can't ABIT KT7A / KT7A-RAID V1.0/1.1/1.2 and KT7E mainboards support AMD AthlonXP processors?"
    http://fae.abit.com.tw/eng/faq/qa/2001/2001101801.htm
    (ANSWER:
AMD new processor AthlonXP is slightly different from old Athlon and need a hardware modification. Without the modification, system may boot up flawlessly sometimes but fail to power on in some cases. It's the root cause why KT7A / KT7A-RAID V1.0/1.1/1.2 and KT7E mainboards cannot support AthlonXP processors.)

According to the KT7* manual from ABIT( http://www.abit-usa.com/products/mb/manual.php?categories=1&model=88 ), the KT7A / KT7A-RAID will support
--all the Duron Socket A processors based on 200MHz(100MHz DDR)
--all the Athlon Socket A processors based on 200MHz/266MHz(100MHz/133MHz DDR)

    ***

Since I don't know about how AMD screws with numbers, I am only guessing that means one can run the KT7A at 100MHz or 133MHz FSB and the processor does something to make it look like 200 or 266 MHz, respectively, to it...

IF that is true, the best *stable* CPU/MB combo will be with:
The fastest Duron w/ 200FSB is 1.3GHz (pricewatch for ~40 bUckS)
The fastest Athlon w/ 266FSB is 1.4GHz (pricewatch for ~60 bUckS)

According to a review, " AMD Athlon 1.2GHz with 266MHz FSB ",( http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/athlon-1200.html ), an Athlon 1.2GHz w/ 200MHz using PC133 SDRAM does a PDG job of holding its own against the other "faster" ones and sometimes beating them!
I would presume that the 1.4GHz @266MHz would sneak out even a little bit more performance but if you want 2+ or 3+ GHz performance you are going to need a newer board.
