BIOS virus?!?!?

edited June 2003 in Hardware
I'm about to mess with a friend's ABIT KR7A/133 RAID to try to solve a problem. He says that immediately after formatting and reinstalling Windows and Norton, he gets a virus alert. Among the ones he says are listed are Mumu, LGate, and Nebiw. He says he's low level formatted his HD as well. Any clues as to what I should look for?

Does Norton give the alert out of the blue, or does it happen when doing a system scan? Also, which version of Norton is he running, and has he ran Live Update?

Try turning on "Boot time Virus scan" or something named similar in the BIOS, as most Mobos have this option. It will find a bootblock or BIOS virus if there is one.

After he low-leveled... did he ever install software off a disk or cd that he had made not bought? If so he reinfected his own machine again probably.

Can his virus software not simply finish cleaning the disk?
