Onthe msi kd it says pc2100 ddr works but it says 144-bit? Is this differant from regular pc2100 ddr? I am assuming it is because the msi k7d just says pc2100 ddr.

I need the definitive answer here pretty fast so Omega or Thrash or someone better get in here and get me some answers fast! (grin)

Are you sure it doesn't say 144-pin?

there's no such thing as 144-bit anything. SODIMMs are 144pin (laptop memory) but some desktops (particularly macintoshes) use the SODIMM package for memory.

Opterons need ECC REG memory - I used samsung PC2700 ECC REG DDR when I built an opteron box.

It would be really really weird for an opteron motherboard to use SODIMMs. I wouldn't say it's impossible, but I would say it's really weird if it does.

MSI's web page describing the MSI k8 dualie

    http://www.msicomputer.com/product/detail_spec/product_detail.asp?model=K8D_Master-F

144 bit is what it says.

Was yours a dual opteron on the amd chipset?

and thanks for the quick reply. I have a deal I am looking at for a dual opteron and I have to decide fast. I have a gb of reg pc2100 infineon ddr and if that works I want to scarf the board. But if I'm gettting into special high priced memory I may have to pass as I just bought a dual xeon two days ago.

MSI lists infineon pc2100 ddr as on the approved list but that 144 bit crap had me bugged.

It says 144-bit because ECC needs those extra bits to manage the error correction. So its 128 bits plus ECC interface.

    More detailed information here.

So its really regular reg ecc ddr right?

My reg ecc ddr was oem's to IBM but its stamped infineon and has a dlightly differant part number then infineon shows anywhere on their site and I'm guessing because it was oem'd to ibm.

Its pc2100 reg ecc ddr at cl2. It works in my msi and asus dual MPX chipset boards.

That should be right. Never touched any reg ecc ddr myself though. I would trust primesuspect´s experience there :D

I hope so as I just bought a dual msi kd and a opteron cpu.

new in the box the combo was $325 so I guess I can resell it for that as newegg lists it for like $437 at newegg for just the board and the cheapest opteron was $197

Ok this is one of those to0 good to be true stories and I'm getting worried.

Its a msi K8d dual cpu motherbaod and a Atlon 64 not a opteron. I asked the specific part number from AMD and its a new athlon 64 fx51 that fits a socket 940. Thats a friggon 700 dollar chip and a 400 dollor MB?

    WTF?

All socket 940 boards are compatible with both the Opteron and the Athlon64 FX series chips. They both <b>require</b> registered memory, but ECC is <b>NOT</b> required.

As long as it's registered, ECC being optional, it will function correctly in a socket 940 motherboard with both the Opteron or the Athlon64 FX.

I can't answer your "WTF?" question because I can barely understand what you're actually asking.

Well Tex just bought $1100 worth of hardware for $325. Seems a little out of whack to me. Can you get an pics Tex? Proof that what you are buying is actually what it is? I am guessing this is an ebay bid, maybe?

It seems to good to be true also. And I have never got ripped off on ebay so this may be my first time. the guy had 44 things for feedback and two negatives. One was from a guy that claimed to of paid but he got negative feedback left to him from the buyer. The other guy was bitchin about some pile of old hard drives he had bought from the guy. I will be checking on paypal's buyer protection policies as I know they have some. I am thinking this would be a good one to pay with a credit card as I could contest the charges anyway.

    Here is the item description.

MSI K8DMASTER-F Tower 8131 DualS940 EATX, VGA, LAN Product Description: Dual Opteron! The only potential downfall, besides the dubiously low price, is the fact that "COMES WITH THE AMD 64 ATHLON CPU" is rather vague. It could be a socket 754, or a fool who doesn't even know what they're talking about.

I mean this isnt a ****load of money and paypal says if its fraud they will try and recover it and they also said if you paypal'd thru a credit card you could still contest the charge thru the credit card company and try for a reversal. If its shipped thru the USPS then its also mail fraud and thats a serious crime itself.

I mean even if both are dead they should be under warranty unless the cpu is just torched and burnt the socket and stuff. MSI's boards are two years parts and labor and thrree years parts. Any AMD cpu even the OEM ones have one year??

I figured it was hot maybe? LMAO

    Tex

Thrax... I asked specificaly for the model number on the boxed cpu.

This is what I got back

    ADAFX51CEP5AK

And thats one that fits it. I figured the board was worth that price and I could sell a athlong 64 of any kind for enough to get a opteron anyway. The athlon 64's are way more expensive then a opteron

Thats why I am paying with a credit card so I can contest the charge. Credit card companys are pretty good about dealing with fraud and reversing charges. (grin) I have had them deal with contested charges very quickly in the past.

paypal and ebay have like a $200 buyer protection thing if its fraud etc...

And they recomend I use a credit card to pay even thru them as I can still contest the charges thru the credit card.

    Sounds like a plan.

    Lets see,

I have a msi-k7d with dual 2100's with a gb of reg ecc
A dual asus with dual 1700's with reg ecc
a tyan thunder with dual p3 700s' with a gb of reg ecc and two 64/66 slots

I bought a tyan dual xeon with two 2.0ghz p4 xeons on Friday and now this thing falls into my lap.

I need to sell some toys to pay for this crap. I put an add in the for sale section of 2cpu.com offering either the asus or the dual p3 for sale with cpu's and ram.

I hate to sell the dual p3 as its almost dead silent for a fileserver that had to run 24/7 and with the two 64bit slots it handles scsi raid and a 64bit NIC really sweet and has onboard video and all.

But some of this crap has to go.

I think he is a fraud now. When you look at the 40+ items he sold with feedback most were low dollar junk and some old used computer stuff.

In the last 48 hours he has sold 4,000+ dollors worth of high tech stuff all in quick sales with low prices on "buy it nows" so they would all end in two days and he has no new listings. He sold a 42 inch plasma high def TV for $800 that should of cost thousands... new in the box. Like my deal people jumped on it as a "too good to be true" deal. And I think it is. He was selling stuff for 25 percent of the actual discounted prices you could fine. All new "in the box" stuff.

How about one auction for three radeon 9800's with 256mb ram? Not for 3 or 4 hundred each but just $315 for all three?

He made a big hit and was wanting payment real fast and wouldn't ship fast. It had to go UPS ground although I wanted to overnight it here on my nickle. Which gave him 5 days or so to clear out before everyone started complaining I suspect.

I think I'll let him cool his jets for a few days. I won't be making any payments fast anyway. (grin)

I have contacted all the buyers and they are squeezing him. Some have asked paypal to lock his account etc..

Even the ones that didn't demand refunds are starting to see at least partial reversals showing up. Sad when I was the only guy that didn't pay and I worked so hard to keep everyone informed etc. We found his name in the phoenix phone book although it was a differant number then given ebay... after they started calling the number reversals started slipiong thru. Imagine that.

She sent emails to the lady that bought a $800 plasma tv and was demanding contact info etc... anbd she was shouting " I HATE YOU I HATE YOU !!!"

Very starnge deal but at least I dodged the bullet again.
