I went to get on the trusty Acer travelmate 602ter this morning and for those of you who dont know PIII 650 192mb CDRW 15" screen.. Anyway i got a svchost error when it started up and it wouldnt connect to my home network so i plugged a phone cable in to test it.. Well it connected and ran but i also got another svchost error when it connected but i still could access the net.. Anyway so i restarted in safe mode and ran a diagnostic test program on it and it didnt find anything wrong. So then i restarted in normal and my modem wouldnt respond to ****... So i removed it out of device manager and it still didnt work.. At that point it had 2000 pro on it. So i got the xp cd out and installed it. Installed perfectly but still no modem and no ethernet.. Note these are onboard.. So i dont know what the hell happened. Any ideas?

Updated any drivers or software recently? I presume you've obviously had it working fine up until now, so I feel it's reasonable to conclude it is a software problem. I suggest instead of just disabling the device/s in question, remove their drivers. Obviously the first place to start in this procedure is the add/remove programs area, after that you want to use a registry editor (you can find one in the Short-Media downloads section) to help you get rid of any relating remaining registry strings etc etc.

You also should go through some of your Windows system folders, searching to delete relating driver files, if you know them to be third party and not Windows 2000 or XP generic. You may find adding the company info tab to the folders your are searching through i.e c:\windows\system32 (i.e in details view) will help you isolate any driver files relating to the problem component/s in question, more easily. However I might remind you, to be cautious and only delete driver files you are sure to be safe to delete, i.e third party ones. If in doubt, don't delete. I also suggest you set a system restore point before you do any deep meddling.

p.s You might find clearing your whole startup list (in Msconfig) might bring light to a solution to your problem.

Nevertheless, try and rid your system of the relating drivers to the best of your ability, then try re-installing them, or letting Windows re-install them. If that doesn't solve your problems, then post back and I'll have another think.

Also, any software or hotfixes you may have recently installed, which you think are suspect, you should also remove.

Spinner made some good points. One I'd add is to check your BIOS and cmos battery - being onboard, maybe they got disabled somehow.

Your ethernet is fubared. I don't know anything about Acer but I can replace mine on my laptop. Flip your laptop over and see if there is a door to get to it. You might have to get into the motherboard to get to it. If not, you can buy PC cards for wireless and wired Ethernet.

Sounds like the best thing to do.
