Uh-oh...... click of death

I just got a clicking from my IBM 120gxp, the HDD activity light wouldnt go off, and the system froze up after a few seconds.

Is this a one time thing or is the drive dying?

BTW, it's over a year old now, been running almost 24/7 since last summer

I would start by running the mfgrs test tools then do what is recomended. Depending on how close to a yearold they are you may end up RMA'ing it. Death may be close but not necessarilly certain.

Just to be on the safe side, back up all your files that are important to you. Usually the click of death means a near death for your hdd. mtgoat had some good suggestions also, would be worth your time to follow up on it.

Thanks mtgoat, I think Newegg only gave a 1 year warranty on their 120gxp's, but I have a friend that used Hitachi's serial number checker to see if his was still under warranty and it said it was until 2005. He bought his before mine I think

Thanks Clutch, I made sure to do that.

Me too, and it was an IBM as well, although it lasted 3 months before it finally died. Best to get it done ASAP though, cause it's a sick lil' HDD that's for sure

Do all HDD's die in this fashion?

This drive has really not been babied, so to speak, so I doubt it's because it's an IBM

Well, we call them "deathstars" for a reason ;)

I had a few die that death, and I haven't bought an IBM nor recommended an IBM drive since.

Not all drives die like this, but it seems epidemic with the IBMs.

My 80GB 120GXP returned from RMA, a refurbished drive with a Hitachi label. I think yesterday I heard a single click from inside the server case, but the system seems to be running. Gonna run DFT soon to find out. Luckily, all retailers within the EU are required to give the customer a 2-year warranty on almost any product.

    Thanks for your comments guys.

I know it hasn't failed yet, but can I still RMA it or will they send it back to me?

If you are within the time frame then just RMA it after salvaging your data.

I already got the important stuff :D

It actually hasn't done it for 2 days now, maybe I'll get a bigger drive or a 180gxp in return :)

Looks like IBM is going through another round of quality deficiencies.

I wouldn't go that far Dan, this drive really hasn't been taken care of, and has lasted 1 year and 1 month before anything remotely serious started to happen. It's been pretty much run 24/7

Not all drives die like that. Magnetic interferance, motor stopping can also happen. Magnetic interferance can damage drive but usually corrupts data.

I have two of the IBM 120 GXP's in a RAID 0 array at the moment and one is giving me the 'click of death' The S.M.A.R.T tells me that it is having trouble spinning up but the IBM diagnostic tools says things are fine.

When I boot the system I get the click and then it loads windows, sometimes very slowly. The thing that is annoying is that I get a similar noise while running widows; it halts the system for a few seconds and the runs.

I’m just gonna hold on and see when it blows.

Ouch, I'd still try to RMA it though, no sense waiting for the imminent to happen... if you describe that to a IBM tech they can't refuse a RMA... and I think their web form for RMA allows you to enter an explanation... but I've called them and they were helpful, they KNOW they have problems and are trying to save face every chance they get, so expect only good things :).

Just a little update a year on.....

I sent the newer of the two 120GXPs for an RMA and they sent me back a refurbished model. I then placed them back in a new RAID 0 array and things were running fine for a few months then the noise returned.

I decided to break up the array to play it safe and the drives have sat around for a while. I put them into another PC and they have performed as individual drives fine ever since; no problems with the diagnostic tools and they pass the S.M.A.R.T. tests no problems.

My new hunch is that perhaps the problem was somehow power supply related as my Enermax PSU has been acting funny at the same time. All very strange
