when i open My Computer it reconizes it as a device,
just incase i made sure all the wiring was secure
then i reinstalled the following drivers

I take it that you just installed this and it has never worked. What operating system are you using?

First, check that the jumpers are set correctly for Master or Slave depending on where it is connected in relation to other drives.

Next, go to device manager and see if there are any yellow exclamation marks.

If you have EZcd creator installed, it seems that it will not play well if you have other burning software installed.

MSI Dragonwriters get their drivers with a Nero 5 (I am running the latest Nero with one) install most easily. The only MSI 48X burners I know of are in the Dragonwriter series-- with Nero they are excellent, without Nero installed they do not behave.

They do not like Roxio software, period, at this time. Roxio did not have a good Dragonwriter driver as of two weeks ago. The adaptec software written before Roxio was spun off definitely does not work. This is an MMC3 burner that is not fully backward compatible to MMC2 but with the right software it is excellent.

Stock full version of Nero will find and use the Dragonwriter, you do not need an MSI bundled Nero CD. You DO need Nero 5 though and 5.5 works better. This is in part for others who might buy OEM Dragonwriters-- do so only if you have Nero or a Dragonwriter specific OEM CD from MSI. My Dragonwriter works better with an 80-conductor IDE cable than with a 40-conductor, it was hardwired to get along on same cable as the nwewer drives that need that kind of cable. On an older box, then, or with an older cable, it might misbehave and you might get to uninstall and reinstall NERO after changing cables to get it to work really well. It will also default strangely if told to automaticly cable-select, it is best if back jumper on burner is set either slave or master as needed to get it to behave best.

All burners should come with software-- that software is usually software where the publisher and drive mfr work together to get teh software working with the drive it comes with, and soem then use those tunes in their full version software also-- in this case, MSI did that with Ahead, which publishes Nero now. And Roxio got left out and the Dragonwriters do not work to best speeds with Roxio stuff.

A Plextor is more compatible across lots of softwares used for burning.

im running XP and Nero 5*came bundled with the writer*
it was working quite well untill a few weeks ago.
i begun to have problems with writing cds and had to lower the write speed to get successful burns. i upgraded to 5.5 with no results.
i left my pc running when i went on vac. for 3 days and when i returned the drive couldnt read cds.
    ive tried reinstalling Nero
im begining to think its more of a mech. problem but i really hope its not.

Well, old cables can die with heat-- the old IDE cables use aluminum conductors. I would replace first the cable and try with same software install. The Nero did not ask you to put in a code you did not have, did it?? This can happen if the wrong Nero CD got sent with drive and the drive was gotten in a trade or was repacked in a store and the wrong Nero disk stuck in.

Also, I said I was running the latest Nero-- I installed Nero, then updated it by going to Ahead's site and getting the english version to come up (site is in Germany) and finding the support downloads area and updating to latest by downloading the update and installing.

This was likely a Nero thing as in Linux I never had speed issues with this burner at all, it just worked better than my TDK 48X did. Now that I thnk about it, the MSI support area mentioned updating Nero woudl be good. Look in your curent Nero folder, find the nero file that runs, right click it and click the properites option, then click advanced, and then see if the version is 5.5.10+ soemthing or greater. If not, update Nero. One sec, need another tab open.....

Yeah, downloads info and links are here (English):

Call whomever you purchased it from and see if it's still under warranty. If it is, they'll give you an address to send it back to, and they'll send you a new one. If it isn't, you're probably out of luck, and will have to purchase a new one.

Um, tell the place that you need a key for the wrong nero they shipped you with the drive if the key is an issue. Once the nero is in and a key entered if you can run an update and not need a key if you do not uninstall the old first.

Secondly, if you have a Dragonwriter and a DVD, the Dragonwriter likes to be master. Burners can come jumpered master, so can DVDs, but I have been assuming you did not move the DVD and then have this happen also (did not know that a DVD was there, which would change what I would do like this-- unplug DVD from cable with poer off, reboot, see if Dragonwriter gets found. If it gets found and works then I would indeed say that jumpers on drives conflict in some way and issue is not just software or just one drive.).

Good Luck, and if you got it from a major US company and I knew who I might be able to persuade someone to help you from there also. Depends on who.
