How to change a cluster size.

edited July 2003 in Hardware
I have riad 0 set up and I'm trying to get 16/16 but I don't have another hard drive to boot from to change it, so is there another way of doing this without another hard drive. I have the raid set up right now with 16k but just need to change the cluster size to 16k thanks for any help.

You may not "change it" thru windows without reformating.

Try PM8 or Paragon PM. They are the only two programs that can modify a ntfs cluster size. Otherwise format the disk again

I don't mind reformating if I could find away to change the cluster size to 16k. If I reformat where do you change that setting and how. Thanks Tex

From disk management in XP when you format it asks you for the cluster size.

right click on my computer. select manage. selct disk management and right click on the disk you want to format and select format. This works if you are not booting and running XP from that disk.

If you are then just email me instead.

When the writes are that low you usually need to bump the latentcy for the controller up. You have a copy of powerstrip? The link I gave ya had the full version of it burried on thier someplace.

So are the reads about normal or are they down too, I've tryed the power strip deal and it didn't make much difference went from 32 - 64 but didn't try higher than that.

I have went as high as 240+ with the hpt's.

How the scores are really depend on the drives. I don't see the make or model of drive anywhere?

What was the differance in the two atto's you posted? The results were a lot differant. The first one was much smoother.

have you updated the bios and drivers and done all the other stuff to tweak the raid out?

The first one is the way it is now with Dynamic disk and the other one was at 16/16 but I couldn't get it to run that good agian, but ya I'm sorry my drives I'm using are 2 80g wd w/ 8mb cache and I have he newset bios and driver installed its the tx2000 promise controller.

Oh its a tx2000 huh.... try bumping the latency WAY up and try again. My TX4 wanted more like 255 or whatever the highest setting is.

Those drives tweaked right should be hitting closer to 90,000.

Whats the MB and what slot is it in? I am betting its sharing an IRQ at the board level.

Its the Abit NF7-S and its in the 2nd pci slot and I looked at the IRQ's and it has its own IRQ its not sharing with anything.

I put it at 248 latency and it got worst even tryed 100 it it didn't make any diference.

Bummer. Try another slot just for kicks and grins. One of those drives should hit 50,000 for comparison and the nforce boards usually do well at this stuff? I wonder if it could be a bios setting?

What is this all about, dam good scores though but I don't believe it,lol. I also reformated and just for shits and giggles I tryed 32/32 but I have a problem I can't change it to 32k in windows when I use partition magic it gives me an error saying "compressed or sparse files" whatever that means.
