New system...

edited July 2003 in Hardware
My friend is building a new system and has decided to go AMD. I don't have any experience with AMD systems so I was unable to give him any good suggestions for it. It's going to be used primarily for gaming and he wants top of the line. What suggestions can you all give him? Thanks!

tell him he wants an NForce2 Ultra board, probably an NF7-S but he could also swing the direction of an A7N8X Deluxe (first is abit second is asus). he'll want to take advantage of the dual channel cabability, so probably 2 sticks of ddr400 or better w/ good timings, i.e. corsair or kingston hyperX (which is on sale at bestbuy or compusa right now for $99 per 512 stick ar) and he will want to go with the 3000+ and NOT the 3200+, because since AMD's numbering system is far too optimistic, the increased bus speed on the 3200+ doesn't help at all. alternatively, if he wants to OC, he can get a 2500+ and an SLK-900u HSF to beat the hell out of that CPU

a few additions: I have an allied 450w from newegg and the rails are pretty stable, especially considering how little the PSU cost me. also, gotta remember the 8 meg cache WD or Maxtor HD's ... once you've used them you can't go back, seriously
