Centrino vs P4

edited July 2003 in Hardware
Okay, ive been in the market for a laptop for a while now and have yet to truly decide which would be better. Its going to be a total desktop replacement...as its going to be my only computer for about 2 years. As such, I'm going to do everything on it...including gaming. Nowadays its very easy to say that computer gaming is the most intense process for any computer, and thus is used to rate thier preformance. I cant find any information comparing the Centrino 1.7 and the P4 3ghz (NOT the P4-m) in terms of gaming, video, even multitrack audio. Does anyone have any information about the two in these areas? Will a 1.7 P-m really out/equally preform the full fledged 3.06 P$ (533 bus versison)? Thanks for any information you guys can offer.

I would be more concerned about the graphics card for gaming... and with the Mobility Radeon 9600 coming out soon, you can't go wrong.

I use my dell laptop for everything (gaming, designing, work). Sold my PC a few months back coz there wasn't any point anymore.

Altho I haven't seen benchies of Centrino vs. Desktop, I can say however that the Centrino is slightly faster then higher clocked mobile P4's from what I've seen, so I doubt it would perform as fast as a 3+ GHz chip.

People will prolly tell you to get a Desktop for better performance and value, but if money isn't an issue, then of course, a laptop.

Yea, im aware of the 9600...cant wait. The thing is im studying overseas for that time so a desktop is just out of the question. As such money is really no object...god bless student loans. However when i have to go, i have to go...whether or not the 9600 has arrived in a laptop ill jump on. I would have to agree with you on the 3ghz beating out the centrino 1.7...thats what my gut tells me anyway. I would be interested in seeing real world comparisons of the two...so if anyone has a 1.7 centrino or a 3ghz p4 laptop, run 3dmark or some other bench mark tool. Id be interested to see how large of a gap is there. If its small, then the extra battery life might just be worth it.

The "Centrino" is a CPU based on the older mobile pentium 3 line of processors. They are quite good and run VERY hot. If you need raw power go for the higher end centrino but personally if you want to get more work done and game comfortably then go for a higher end onboard GPU and make sure your internal hard disk is as new and fast as they come. The HDD is the real bottleneck in a laptop.

if money is no object, why is there even a question?
    this is what u want

and if money was an object, i would go wtih centrino jsut cause how much power it takes.. it like doubles ur bateri (spelling?) life..
