8.5GB DVD+R discs and drives to ship April

edited November 2003 in Science & Tech
Members of the DVD+RW alliance have announced that we can all expect double layer, almost double-capacity DVD+R drives and supporting media, next April. This means that now we'll all be able to create DVD discs, that carry the same capacity as the dual layer pre-recorded discs most of the DVD movies we buy in the shops are burnt onto.

[blockquote]The technology, co-developed by drive maker Philips, and media specialists Verbatim and Mitsubishi Kagaku, adds a second recording layer to a standard-thickness DVD+R disc, taking the medium's capacity from 4.7GB to 8.5GB.

10/1 says these will be incompatible with set top DVD Players moreso than their existing 4.7GB brothers...Which are already miserable.
