Okay was reading up on some winXP tweaks, and they mention disabling "Indexing for Fast File Searching" on hard drives and also disabling the service...

"This service always has been a major resource hog. I NEVER recommend having this service enabled. Remove the function via the “Add / Remove Programs” icon in the control panel (Windows Setup Programs). It uses about 500 K to 2 MB in an idle state, not to mention the amount of memory and CPU resources it takes to INDEX the drives. I have had people (and witnessed it on other people's computers) report to me that the Indexing Service sometimes starts up EVEN while the system is NOT idle… as in the middle of a game. You may feel, as I do, that this is unacceptable. If your computer suddenly seems “sluggish,” Indexing Service is usually the cause of it."

what are your guys opinions?..will this slow down performance any or should i no diasable it...

TIA

    I wouldn't disable it...

Set it to manual..in fact, I never set anything to disable in services.msc

although if you ever do a *.* file search on a large drive, it will take forever to find what you're looking for.

Well, if you do a *.* search, you're obviously not looking for anything in particular... ;)

Um, with older MS Office, there was a FASTFILE.exe. It got reworked and migrated into the NTFS based file systems and did a decent amount of taking up background resources.

If your machine gets hyper sluggish, you can set that AND Windows Messenger Service to manual or disabled. The WMS is not MSN Messenger, and is not needed for the MSN MEssenger to work.

Both these are of most use on a LAN where your workstation needs to know admin message updates and where it needs map changes for remote drives your workstation is tracking. If the only thing like a lan that your workstation is on is the internet, and the box is a true workstation and not a server for internet clients, then neither service is needed usually. Widnows Messenger Service DEFINITELY is not wanted on a single-box-on-the-web situation, unless you liek all those nice black writing on gray default box messages and ads.

So that can be added to the list along with what the guy said above -- which has been majorly true since about Office 1997's release.

I've never turned it off myself, that service is one of them though that if you turn it off your benchmarks will go up. But in just day to day usage it will seem a little sluggish and slower is the way I've always understood it.
