Slightly chipped Athlon XP Core

edited July 2003 in Hardware
Right, I have a slightly chipped AthlonXP 2500+ (Barton) CPU

Its cracked at the top of core (around 3mm L by 1.5mm W)

IF I try this in a brand new NF7-S is there any danger of destroying the motherboard in your opinion, I would like to try this CPU out but not in exchange for a dead motherboard :)

Or do I just throw the dam processor out?

(The heatsink HAS been thrown away)

Not likely to blow board, likely (extremely if crack is at all deep) to result in damaged HD data-- if deep layers are separated by crack and only higher than normal woltage or amperage is likely to flow much at all. Try on a spare HD with a basic Widnows install. and run for day or so minimum-- maybe fold with it, see if results are decent.

I am about 70% sure CPU is bad. If heat cracked, 90% sure it will not be stable.

I have heard of cpu's being cracked and still running, also with a bent or missing pin. Matter of hot or miss situation I believe.

James, i know FOR SURE you won´t hurt the board if you test it, trust me. The chip might still work actually. My first XP looked like a bag of chips after about 4 months and fortytwelwe reinstalls. It still worked when i gave it away and as far as i know, it still does.
