if you have enough ram u could run without a pagefile, although i do know some programs are picky when u do use one, photoshop for example. Im sure someone has done more testing with/without a pagefile that could give a better answer

Thanks for the reply, I'm running 512mb of ram so not using the paging file isn't giving me any problems yet.

Actually you didn't mention the OS and there are situations where when recovering from a crash on boot that it has to have a paging file to complete. Are you that hard up for disk space? Why not make a small fixed size swap file and tweak the registry to favor not swapping. By that I mean to try and use ram and not swap as much as possible. Lock the kernal into ram etc..

Tex, that sounds like a good idea and would like to try that, but never heard of being able to 'tweak' the registry that way... any pointers/links you could provide to help? I'm up to 1gig of RAM, I'd like to push as much as possible into it.

I have 1GB of RAM, but always maintain a 256MB page file. There are a few games and programs that would probably complain if you didn't have a page file. So therefore, thats why I have a page file

You want a page file, there are many instances where programs need to store some excess data and it doesnt really need to go in the ram. What you should try to do is make windows use your ram as much as possible.

Use one of the XP/2000 tweaker programs. I actually use like 3 of them to keep from having to edit the registry by hand. Some do things that others do not.

    Customizer XP. X-Setup. Tweak-xp etc...
