Formatted but still no HT

edited August 2003 in Hardware
I recently upgraded from a 2.4Ghz to a 3.06Ghz HT chip and it didnt show up two CPU's in task manager so i formatted, and still only shows 1 CPU. HT is enabled in teh BIOS

I have all the latest drivers, however I do have the standard BIOS, do I need to upgrade it? Im using a Shuttle SB51-G

if H-T is an option in the bios, you shouldn't need to upgrade, but i guess it can't hurt. are you using XP Home? maybe thats not SMP enabled?

Ive never used a H-T Processor, But are you sure that a processor with Hyperthreading enabled will show up in Windows XP, I thought H-T was something to do with multi-tasking.

Also does Windows XP professional version support more than one processor or do you need Windows 2003 Server for that.

Anyway I'll be glad to know if you can get it working

    Ok, hyperthreading works like this:

In utter truth, you do not have two full CPUs. What you do have is one multipiped CPU. It will need, right now, an XP Pro or an SMP compatible Linux to run right. For XP, to really use SMP, you need to use Pro now and probably should figure on the NEXT professional workstation version to get full use of H-T in Windows. Linux comes with multiple kernels, two of which can do SMP (which used to be seperate processors, but the H-T compatible P4's were designed to work with SMP operating systems fairly well. The best full support for H-T itself is in the future, XP Pro leverages a lot os it as it can handle 2 CPUs using SMP capabilities and Hoem was not set up for that really.

With SMP or an H-T using SMP simulation, which is what a large part of H-T is designed to act like with current software, it does act basicly like two CPUs, yes. I would not, right now, bother with Server unless you do indeed need a server's ability to feed and talk to many other machines at once. XP Pro is sufficient.

Server would also act like it had an SMP hardware system to work with right now. BUT, adminning a server box is a lot more complex, so I would say not to use Server O\Ss in full unless needed.
