"The update process was unable to complete sucessfully."

When I check the details I get this:

LiveUpdate was not able to complete this update.

They need to know about this, but I woudl uninstall, patch Windows with Widnwos Update, and then reinstall. After each update of sysmantec, if there are program parts to the update and not just definitions of viruses, reboot.

The common client is a core thing that lets Symantec products react right to Windows events and in Antivirus it also supports NAV autoactivating when email is sent and received. This set of things displayed above is about 1\4 of the user interface core for Symantec stuff.

I can say that when I have a failure like that, I wait and try again in 24-48 hours if the AV works and if not I uninstall and reinstall.

If it happens twice for the client update seperated by two days, you do need Symantec tech support. They need you to report to them, with ohters, to be able to ID both driver and software issues. This bad a client thing I have not seen from Symantec stuff on otherwise normally behaving Windows boxes.

Thank you. I always reboot after any update or install if it says to or not, just an old practice that I will never change. As to re-installing System works, I have twice now and get the same thing. This was from a recently downloaded purchase and I am suspecting I may have a boogered download since it did the same thing on my wife's machine too. :(

Go to Symantec's site and use the online support wizard. It tells ya exactly whats wrong. It can be a variety of things actually but I have had great luck with the online wizard sorting out update problems. I had bad virus probs before I left and they were changing registry values to keep you from applying the updates. Since I dual or tripple boot 4 computers in the house getting everything cleaned and updated was a nightmare.

    Tex,

Thanks a lot but I figured it out. My OS install was all messed up since I forgot that I had done some messing around thinking it was a temporary install with the intent to go back and do it over later that didn't happed due to my personal life. I zeroed all my drives and started over and all is well now. My wife's died due to a mobo failure days later so I got her a new board and gave her a fresh install and it works good now too. Kind of weird that 2 different machines suffering from different problems gave similar problems with my Norton 2003. But it all washed out in the end. :D

It easy to tweak stuff so live update barfs. Disabling ntfs 8.3 filenames kills several also for example.
