KT7A 100% cpu freezing.

edited October 2003 in Hardware
Alright heres the low down on the crap thats going on in my already stressful life.. (like thats uncommon)

My computer is getting a 100% cpu usage freeze on startup in windows X-Plode

Here's what i'm running.
abit KT7A mobo
900mhz athlon t-bird
256mb ram
dcom ethernet in pci slot 4
geforce 2 gts on ver.45.53
20 gig fujitsu 7200 hd
SB live! card

Now heres the thing.. this started happening here and there... now i can't even start my computer all the way up before it locks.

I just formated my HD and installed windows xp on my buddys dell system because i can't install windows xp without damn locks... everytime i've formatted my HD windows xp takes like 10-20 times to install before i get thru it.. seems if i keep moving the mouse around it works better.

i've been reading sites for hours upon hours. Seems this might be a nvidia 4in1 problem or nvidia v45.53 problem. but I don't know for sure. Right now i'm gonna flash my KT7A mobo with the latest mobo drivers hoping it'll fix then i'll try to totally re-install windows on my computer. I installed windows and such on this computer because i thought it had to do with a corrupt sector on my harddisk but it seems that this isn't the case.. but maybe it is and it just hasn't hit yet.

Also.. last time i flashed my mobo to ID-64 i thought you made a boot disk in windows xp then deleted autoexec.bat and config.sys to ensure they don't load up?

Or can i just make the boot disk then swap the disk once loaded up with the flash disk?

Any information is greatly appreciated. Hopefully i Figure this crappy problem out. I used to never have problems with this computer until like 4 months ago.... now i wish i had the cash to get a decent system going..

    Try a new IDE cable.

and what if the new IDE cable doesn't work??

I sent you a pm but try a different power supply among other parts. Just process of elimination to find what is broken as I don't see a software problem causing this.

This is often the result of a driver problem. Think back to what drivers might have been installed recently. To track down the error further, go to "event viewer" which you can get to through administrative tools (or querying help). Look for red and yellow icons which will describe errors. Search on google for possible solutions to those errors. Post what you come up with.

so you took your 20gb out and put it in a dell and formatted then installed WinXP? Then put it back in your system and it gave you trouble or was it giving you trouble while still in the dell?

no.. at first i thought it was my HD that was causing the locks so i tried to format it in my AMD system but it locked again so i put it into my buddies dell system and formatted with no problem. installed windows xp onto it to see if it was just a fluke then started messing aorund with it installing games and playing them with no problems..

So now i'm totally sure its not my HD so i'm gonna format then stick in the other system now..

can anyone tell me the exact way to flash my mobo agian.. i just odn't think doing a format in windows xp and checking "Make a windows bootable disk" is right right way to go for it.

i got the right .bin and awdflash already on a disk.. so its ready to flash.

i flashed about a year ago and i thought i remembered doing the make windows bootable but then deleting autoexec.bat and config.sys off it.

    just wondering.

This is how I did it in windows 2000. Copied a page off a link. It might have been from biosmods. It has been a long time.

HOW TO MAKE A FLASH DISK IN Win2000

    1) You can download a straight DOS image
    2) Place a new floppy disk
    3) Double click your DOS image program
    4) When it has finished open My Computer window
5 Double click on the Floppy Disk Icon (A)
    6) Delete all files except: (Command.com) (Io.sys) (Msdos.sys)
    7) Extract your (***.exe) or (***.zip) replacement BIOS to your floppy disk
    8) Check that now there will be 8 files: (Abitfae.bat) (Awdflash.exe) (Command.com) (Io.sys) (***.bin) (***.txt) (Msdos.sys) (Runme.bat)
    9) You're done

You can download a DOS image here: http://bootdisk.com

    HOW TO FLASH

    1) Go to: Start > Shutdown > Restart
    2) Delete key
    3) BIOS: Load Fail-Safe Defaults
    4) Advanced BIOS Features: First Device: Floppy Disk
    5) Advanced BIOS Features: Video BIOS Shadow: Disable
    6) Advanced Chipset Features: System BIOS Cacheable: Disable
    7) Save and Exit
    8) Boot Flash Disk
    9) A:\>Dir (to check the correct 8 or 7 files)
    10) A:\>Runme
    11) You will see three screens:

    A) SCREEN
!Please DO NOT run this batch file under Windows!

    12) Enter

    B) SCREEN
Please make sure of the following:
    1) You have made a CLEAN boot from your floopy disk,
i.e. NO autoexec.bat and config.sys files are loaded.
    2) The BIOS file you are trying to upgrade is correct
for your board, otherwise you will get the unknown failure.
!Be sure the current PC system is pure without
    any resident program!

    13) Enter

    C) SCREEN
!Be sure you are ready to update the BIOS!

    14) Enter

EXIT Now you can exit in three ways:

    TOTALLY SECURE

    15) F10 Exit
    16) Remove boot disk
    17) Power Off
    18) Unplug
    19) Discharge the CMOS for 30 seconds
    20) Reset the jumper
    21) Powercord
    22) Power On
    23) Delete key
    24) Your BIOS Settings
    25) You're done

    TOTALLY SECURE WITH CLEAR CMOS

    15) F10 Exit
    16) A:\>clrcmos.com
    17) Enter
    18) Remove boot disk
    19) Reset
    20) Delete key
    21) Your BIOS Settings
    22) You're done

You can download Clear CMOS here: http://www.unicore.com/techsupport/...s.htm#post42755 and copy to your Flash Disk

    SECURE

    15) F1 Reboot
    16) Remove boot disk
    17) Delete key
    18) Your BIOS Settings
    19) You're done

NOTES: If you get a bad flash DON'T SWITCH OFF the computer. Try again.
If you want a guarantee use the BIOS Savior: http://www.ioss.com.tw/eg/index.html

I did it before I put XP on my KT7A-Raid . I did use clrcmos and runme.bat and it didn't hose my Raid1

You will not be able to install Windows XP with your current video card installed. There is a known conflict that will keep XP from installing with the older Geforce cards. If you "borrow" a different video card just for the install and replace yours afterward you will be OK. I remember when XP came out and all the people who had the KT7A series boards just about went crazy for a while trying to figure out the right formula to make things work. The issues of IRQ conflicts and PCI slot locations became very critical to the successful installation, operation and maintaining a good working system with XP. There are others who can help with the details but I hope that is a start.

mtgoat is spot on with the video card problem and the XP install.

You can not install XP on another computer and then swap drives unless the machines are very similar.

    Hello, there.

I have a similar opinion with RBanfield.

It is a driver conflict or incompatibility issue with a program or driver. Check one by one, starting from the most recent program or driver you have installed and work backwards.

You bunch of n00bs. Check around the CPU socket for leaky or swollen capacitors. A while ago the cap supplier for ABIT and a few other mobbo manufacturers (who don't admit the problem) were using a dodgy formula for the electrolyte inside them. After a year or 2 the capcitors leak electrolyte & vents gas and swells. They don't capacitate as they used to anymore and hence the CPU is receiving a high ripple voltage and becomes unstable eventually to the point where it won't even boot. Its characteristic is deterioration and no apparent reason for the crashes.
The solution, you can solder new ones in if you like (guide on overclockers.com) or you can send it back to abit and they will repair it for you for you for a fee, or you can send it to some other guy who got is name mentioned in some news.
