Is my A7V8X good enough?

edited August 2003 in Hardware
So i have two 512 sticks of DDR pc3200 RAM. My mobo is an A7V8X Asus and i am currently running an AMD 1800+ around 1.47 Ghz. Anyway, i wanted to boost my cpu performence so im thinking about buying an AMD Athlon XP1700+ 1.47GHZ 384K 266 Tbred B (TRAY) (JIUHB:0302). My friends have OC there cpus to around 2.5 ghz and i wanted to know if my hardware is good enough?

should be, i think what people love the most about the NF7 besides the insane OC'ing results is the dual channel controller, which your board does not have.

What revision is your mobo? If it is a rev 2 then you should be OK, otherwise you will need to do some tweeking. I would get a later stepping than what you have listed. Folks are doing real good with JIUHB 0310 (or newer) DLT3 chips. As kanezfan mentioned the NF7 rev 2's are squeezing a bit more out of all the chips.

Hmm, I'd still go with the JIUHB:0302 rather than the 0310.

I currently own an 0310 & 0312 and both will only do between 2g & 2.2g. My old 0302 would do 2.4g before I blew it up, still you may have trouble finding 0302 now.

The easiest way is to use CPUID. I have it layed out in this post and the next since I can only attach one file per post. After you open CPUID click the button indicated for chipset info.

Here is where to look. If it is a Rev 2 board it will say C1 and if it is a Rev 1.xx it will say C3.

WCPUID doesn't report my chipset stepping correctly, i have taken the heatsink off my 8rda+ NB, and it's an A3, but in WCPUID it says A2, and i am using the latest version of WCPUID from the offical site, so i would trust what it says in that program, and rather open my case and look.

OK, this is kind of confusing but the NF2 Rev 2 has C1 on the nortbridge itself but reports C3 in CPUID and CPU-Z and the Rev 1.xx's are reported as C1 and C2. The other way to tell if you are looking at the chip itself is that the Rev 1.xx chips have a metal circle in the chip and the Rev 2's are a solid black square.
