Help please

Ok so I'm getting the following error on this hard drive

E:\ is not accessable

The wrong diskette is in the drive.
Insert (Volume serial number into the drive.

Somebody please tell what to do as this is my backup drive & I'd hate to lose the data.

Ran check disk on it and all seems ok.

Regards

Jim

Is this from windows? If so try from DOS. Can you try the hdd on another PC?

Check the hdd manufacturer's website for drive integrity software (used for testing prior to RMA'ing). It's possible it's a hardware problem, in which case the information's gone, but if it's not then you may need the help of third party software since it sounds like your drive's FAT is corrupted.

Yeah its from windows, i've tried running check from the command prompt and it aborts because it doesn't recognise the volume. I'll try connecting it to another machine tomorrow.

    Hi Tex,

No its NTFS on XP, doesn't matter though cos I've reformatted the drive and alls fine now. Luckily I had made a back up of most of my backed up data on another PC but I had forgotten I'd done that.

Tried the drive in another machine before the format and got the same error. It was a minor power cut that started it all off.

Any way thanks for everyones help.

    Regards
