upgrading to 2000 Pro

edited August 2003 in Science & Tech
I started the process of upgrading an older computer with Win 98 to 2000 Pro.

Part way throught the process the installer generated a list of hardware and software that may not be compatible with 2000.

One of the components listed is the Hard Disk controller.

Can anyone tell me where to look for updated controllers. I don't remember the manufacturer and it won't be easy to physically pull the drive out. Is there an easier way to determine the drive type so I can look for updated controller?

Thanks in Advance!

What disk controller is not compatible? Look in the device manager and see what it is. It may just need a driver? And there stupid compatiblity program isnt always right either. But upgrades from 98 to win2000 or XP are not always the best idea. Half the people unhappy with XP/2000 upgraded instead of doing a clean install. Your trying to upgrade hardware and software that just may not be compatible on a upgrade is the problem. They need updated drivers and stuff to work right.

Not sure what your asking exactly as to where to look for updated controllers? You want to know where to see a list of approved hardware certified by MS? Microsoft has the list. But 95 percent of the controllers on the market work. You may need to get a driver update is all.

If you cough up more info as to the setup your upgrading I will help ya.

Tex is right, upgrading is a bad idea... too many things to muck up... hell, fresh installs aren't even fail-proof :p

If the hard disk controller isn't compatible with windows 2000, it's probably time for a new PC ;)... I say do a fresh install... I've seen w2k installed on insanely old/antiquated equipment (with a lot of RAM), so it's unlikely it WON'T work.

Yeah, I'd have to agree here with the guys above. If the rig is capable of holding at least 128mb of ram, it should be able to run w2k. I've even got it on an old pen pro 200 duallie, and it works great.:)

A fresh install is always the best way to go, back up anything you might have of any importance on that thing and do a format and install.
