Multi boot opinions... Which os are descent enough to have?

Hey, I am setting up a multiboot system. My os are going to forsure be Windows 98SE, Windows XP home, Redhat Linux 9.0 personal, and SuSe linux 8.2 personal. I am going to use Partition Magic 8.0.

Does any one have any input on this? Has anyone tried installing all these os? I know both windows is probably enough, and two Linuxes is over doing it, but should I maybe add Windows 2000 just for the heck of it?

I would just like to know different peoples' opinions about Windows 2000 and any other os.

Well if you want to try to add win2k then go for it, let us know how it turns out. As far as my opinion on win2k, it's a great, stable os. In fact I'm running it on the ICx rig I host, my main rig, the family computer, and winxp is on my backup pc. I have never had a win2k box freeze up on me or crash. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a stable os without the xp colors, not saying that xp isnt also a great os.

:D Thanks, I always thought Windows 2000 was good. Any one else think so or have problems? Also, is Windows XP Profesional pretty much the same (- the hugely colorful look, and the fact that Microsoft says it is loads better)?

 Another question... What is the difference with Windows XP Home and Professional? They sort of made home editions into the professional editions and therefore XP doesn't support a lot of games and such. To me it just is a blue box (instead of green), with less compatablility with software, and $100 or so more usually. I have Office 2000 and XP and therefore don't need and office programs like word that they may bundle with it.

;) By the way, already have got an XP Home...

Xp supports more games and is more compatible not less. You can run programs for older windows in "compatibility mode" and select which version of windows it emulates even.

And wtf? "They sorta made a home edition into a profesional" ? Not sure where your getting this stuff bud. You got it backwards ace. They stripped a lot of the advanced networking, they ability to do software raid and even the ability to do repair installs (which I couln't live without) from the profesional version to give a cheaper "home" version and stripped out features buisness's need to keep them from opting for the cheap versions. They did this to give poor home users stuck with crappy win98 which on its best day wasnt half as stable as XP is today, a way out of OS hell into a stable kernal.

I dual or tripple boot (or wrose) every machine on our home network and thats really a poor description since I run multiple dual cpu machines as servers and run a fiber gigabit LAN also so its more of a Lab then home network really. I picked up another dual CPU mb with 64bit/66mhz slots yesterday on eBay for 12 bucks so that makes three dualies here shortly. I have big racks of scsi drives sitting in a 7 foot tall 19"inch chassis.

You might check out Sys Commander as the boot manager. I have liked it more then the others I have tried although I have had probs getting Suse to install right and so the Suse box dual boots and it handles the dual booting between itself and windows on that one box.

Personally I have no use for win 98 ever again at this point and would flush that choice in favor of a real OS. Try win2k winxp and win2k3. Use the pro versions and forget home unless you run a domiian and then use AS with win2k and try win2k3. Active directory is really cool once you try it.

In my experiences... I have had ABSOLUTELY no trouble with Windows 98, and have had trouble with XP. Even with what you are saying Tex I don't know if I'd need XP pro. I've only used Windows 2000 at school and only had minor problems(probably due to other issues).

By the way... I am not a huge user, I just need my one or two or three home computers to work, with all the bells and whistles and quality stuff.

ok, i'll admit i sounded stupid above... what a month can change, wow! ... By the way, this was my first built system ever.

    XP IS AWESOME!
98 has stupid "program has caused illegal error" which I forgot about.
I also haven't got 98 out of 640x400 resolution, but don't have it installed yet either (gettin the buggers out of XP customization still) I guess I am just to much of a perfectionest, one tiny little error or extra screen on boot up gets my rage to blow up my house.

Take the time to profit from those with hundreds and hundreds of installs on the OS's in question next time. I am not being a smart alec but rather gently suggesting you have a wealth of information available to you here if you keep a open mind and listen. I have built truly thousands of PC's and been in this buisness for 20+ years so my opinion isnt based on a couple installs.

Would be glad to suggest a couple killer XP tweaking programs that really speed up the whole XP "tweaking the interface" ordeal for you. I have three or four packages I quickly install on every new XP/Win2k installation for me or the house here anyway along with a number of registry tweaks in .reg files you just click on to implement. They address everything from network and disk performance, internet browsing tweaks and changes in the start menu's and taskbar etc...

    Best of Luck

    Hi Tex

I'd be interested to hear which tweaking programs you use. I'm always on the lookout for something useful that I may not have tried before.
By the way Tex your posts are still a joy to read. I've been away from Icrontic for too long. Remember the threads we used to have about ABIT KT7 bios lol.

    Doogie (grin) of course

The single best tweaker if I had to live with one (and it doesnt do it all) is still x-setup. After that I use XP customizer or customizer xp not sure which. Those two and a collection of reg tweaks in files I just click on to add to the registry is my XP core tweaks. With win2k customizer 2000 had a ton more tweaks to ajck with the disk subsystemn taht were really cool and tehy were left out of XP customizer.

email or PM if you want links to the tools or I can also link you to my source of XP reg tweaks. There are very few tweaks I make to the registry anymore that I make by hand. And doogie I got a couple cool tools you amy want outside the subject here. Feel free to email or PM me.
