I know I've read somewhere that you should not have any cards in the first pci slot Under the agp slot. I'm looking to see if anyone can clarify this or have anylinks talking about it.

TY fellas :)

Oh btw the reason I'm asking this is becouse a freind of mine is haveing some lagg problems with online gammeing.

He Has a 9700 pro and a soundblaster soundcard in the slot right under his agp slot.

Whenever he Uses Team speak and plays online he laggs badly. but if he doesnt use team speak he has no problem what so ever.

The thing thats leading me to beleive it is that the lagg is due to the sound and video is becouse he stilll pings very good evan when he is lagging.

not sure about that but it could be trapping heat? can anyone confirm this? i know at my first pci slot next to the agp i have a fan that slides in there and pulls the heat off of the card in addition to the cards heatsink/fan

Doesn't matter, his problem is his internet connection - not his CPU/GPU. Team speak causing lag is a dead giveaway that he simply doesn't have enough bandwidth for the game. Look up tips/tricks/tweaks for the game that reduce bandwidth consumption and maybe he'll do better.

And as for the reason behind leaving that PCI slot empty, it is to leave more open space around the video card for better airflow and cooling. Unless he overclocks or is having issues with high temps in general, theres no point in moving things around or removing a card.

Pings and the way they are measured vary from game to game, if you really think sound/video is somehow causing the problems reduce the graphics quality and set his in-game resolution to something like 800x600. If things improve, its a video issue though I don't see how it could be.

    Good luck, and report back.

That is because the 1st PCI slot and AGP share the same IRQ on many mobos. Although this should not make a difference with Win XP and 2000, most peps do not use the 1st PCI slot if it can be avoided.

CC is correct as its really chipset specific. Differanct chipsets have differant pci slots sharing IRQ's.

Well we improved things greatly by takeing down the hardware performance on his sound card. His problem never was his connection becouse he would lag even with a ping of 35. Sound blaster seems to the component causeing the problem.

Never would have emagine that from a sound blaster card hehehehHahaha!

Definitely sounds like he should "uninstall" the sondcard in the davice manager, shut down and move the card down a slot or two. It will work wonders.

Then again he could uninstall the soundblaster and then throw it away! Try something else that's not as bus hungry.
    Just a thought.
