enlighten me about DVD drives

i just saw a DVD +RW drive at best buy for 159.99 not a bad deal, these things are coming down in price. however, before purchasing one i'd like to know what they all can do.

i have no clue what they all mean in terms of +R +RW -R ROM etc...can anyone fill me in as to what these all mean?

    I was just about to post a topic about DVD things, cheers for that link, cleered things up for me.

    So what i can gather is that there are different DVD formats, plues "+" and minus "-". judging from that site the "-" format seem to be more compatable?

    hmmm im gonna look into this...

    another site says the standards "+" and "-" are very similar... ahhh i dunno!

    anyhow i looked online and saw a DVD writer that supports both formats ( + and - ) so im just gonna get that one :D

    might wanna figure out what formats your dvd-standalone plays, unless you're just gonna use the dvd-burner for backups. In which case it doesn't really matter.
