z680s or JBL home theater

edited September 2003 in Hardware
I'm moving out to LA in a few weeks from the east coast, so I can't really take my whole stereo system with me, so I'm thinking of buying something when i get there.

Originally i really wanted to get the Logitech z680s, they look sweet, but i've never tested them out. the other option is to just bring my Yamaha receiver and get a JBL Home theater package...i was looking at these two packages...

1.) JBL SCS135SI

2.) JBL SCS136SI

3.) Logitech z680

any thoughts here????

Links in your post are broken.

Having good PCs speakers rock because they're smaller and the price is right (for a complete surround sound audio solution).

Some of the home theater packages offer good sound for a reasonable price. It's a matter of preference I suppose. I have gone complete HTPC, no television and the only external media device I have is a VCR to play my old tapes through my AIW. I had a complete Sony home theaster I sold in lieu of going HTPC. I don't miss it one bit. My 17" LCD is just big enough for a friend to come over and watch a movie/television (small living room).

so what speaker setup are you using now for your HTPC?? i've heard great things about the z680s...but when it comes down to it, i think my yamaha receiver coupled with a dedicated JBL home theater speaker package will sound better than the z680s. the JBL speakers are about the same size as the ones that come with the z680s, which is nice, plus i can choose a package and get either an 8 inch sub or a 10 inch. still debating, but i think i'm leaning towards the JBL.....

I have the z560s, and they are truly great speakers. I even produice music on the PC and use the logitechs for monitors/reference. They have more than enough bass and have a warmth I found some of the other PC speakers lacked.

I wanted an easy solution for good sound but decent price, hence my choice for Logitechs over Klipsche. Frankly, my ears couldn't tell the difference between the two when I was doing a comparison (friend has the promedia 2.1s, excellent sounding but for a lot of $$).

I was never that impressed with JBL, not with all the decent stuff for much less money available. For $350 the JBLs aren't going to give you much of an advantage over even the z560s for $150-200 less. Only 100w on the sub would worry me, my last sub was 100w and kicked out/distorted during some explosions and such. No such problems with the 180w RMS logitech sub.

i noticed that about the sub too...the 100w could cause a little worry. unfortunately, every place i go to look at the z680s, they don' thave them hooked up to listen to. many people say they're awesome speakers. the JBLs will offer me a little more flexibility the long run though i think....we'll see...i'd like to get some other opinions...thank you for yours!
