New System Shuts off after a minute or two!?

edited September 2003 in Hardware
Hey guys. I just got my new hardware, and put it all together as soon as it showed up at my door. here are the components -

AMD Barton XP 2500+ 333 fsb
Abit NF7-S rev 2.0
3 sticks of Crucial PC3200 256MB
Sapphire Radeon 9500 Pro
3Com 10Bt network card
Creative SB Live! Gamer 4.1
Maxtor 80GB fluid ball bearings ATA133
Antec 300W PS

Anyway, so I booted up the system and everything went fine at first. I got into the BIOS, configured a thing or two, and then I restarted the system. Win98SE was preloaded on the HDD before, so it popped up and started loading. When I got past the login screen, it started detecting new Motherboard Resources or something like that, and then the system just shut itself off.

I turned it back on, and checked out the temps in the bios. Right now I'm using the preinstalled thermal stuff on the bottom of my retail heatsink from the barton, and it stays at around 60c, so i don't think it's overheating.

After having this happen AGAIN, I turned the system back on with a win98 boot disk, planning on reformatting via fdisk. I chose "Start Computer with CD-ROM Support" and in like another 15 seconds, the system shut off again. I'm clueless.

Should I boot it up with only a video card, and one stick of RAM, and see what happens?

This is a big letdown, if anyone has any suggestions or idea's, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

id say to start boot it with minimal components, you might be able to find out the problem that way. The PSU seems a little low on power but thats just my opinion. others that know more will proably respond soon

350W is minimum for a system like yours imho.

For one, that nice video card/CPU is one hell of a drain on the PSU.

Boot with b-bones, videocard, ram, cpu. One last thing you can check is if your system has the cpu temp protection enabled on the bios set low, with the NF7-S its in CPU options and I believe also in the health options.

60c is a little warm - is that surface or core? ;)

The temps may be reduced if you clean the cpu again and HSF and reaply the compound - just enough to cover the core. Excessive compound can actually work against you and increase the temps.

    Ok here's an update.

I unplugged my CD-RW, second HDD, took out my sound and network cards, and I took out 2 of the DDR sticks, leaving one.

It stayed on long enough for me to format C:, and get about 75% of the way through the win98SE install.... pretty good. But then it shut off again. I think you're right about the power supply... that sucks.

I ordered an Antec TruePower 400W from NewEgg... so hopefully that will clear up these problems.

    Edit -

And the 60c is the core CPU temp, system temps are much lower of course.

Also just curious, has anyone experienced this exact same thing before?

I'm really hoping it's the power supply, because as much as I love building computers, there are few things I hate more than the first few days of "getting all the kinks out".

So... if it ISN'T the PS, I'm gonna be real dissapointed... are there any other things it could be?

If its not too late to cancel...

Installing Win98 (or any os) is VERY demanding on the whole system so it still looking like the PSU. Seems like it lasted longer because you reduced the load.

As for other ideas, I'll wait for other people to post, I'll have a think but its late in the UK right now :)

You describe it perfect, and I agree, but the satisfaction after those three days as you know is much better.

    Welcome to Icrontic :)

    Thank you, old friend.

I remember we may have had our differences, most likely my stupid fault... it's cherry. You need not worry about me acting up like I did before... I'm just here for the hardware.

And anyway, I'm not the ADD'd up flamer I was before... I think that was just a way for me to feel better about myself or something... but I've sorted many things out with myself since I have been here last.

Anyway... CHRIST what a great deal on those power supplies! I was considering that one, along with either a Sparkle, Antec, or Enlight. Unfortunatly my order has already been shipped, so I'll just go with the NewEgg. I wish I had seen that sooner!

Anyway, I'll report back on Thursday when my PSU comes.

    Thanks for your help :)

It may not be the PSU at all, ive run systems that require 50% more wattage than your's needs on worse psus. System draw is over estimated, big time, but that still doesnt mean that you dont want a good psu. I have the best psu i can afford (antec true550), i dont use all of it nor will I, but i understand the importance of good clean power, and i wont have to worry about it as a possible problem. (I ran a dual 2400+ system with a 3hdds and a gf4 ti4600 off a 300watt psu for a month or two i was lucky to say the least). 60C core temp is pretty high, that needs to be checked out if its your IDLE temp in bios, i would say that is your problem, so solve that first then try your psu.
