ordinary fans, 3 wires become 2 ????

edited September 2003 in Hardware
This is probarely too simple, but still...

I've got 3 ordinary 12v case fans running from the 12v supply that the HDD's also use and there are only 2 wires running to the fan.
To lower the noise lvl I bought a Zalman ZM Multi Fan Controller 1 and the plugs i need to connect the fans to the controller has 3 wires.... ?

The fan wires are red and black (+ and -) and the controller wires are white, red and black... I was thinking of connecting red to red and black to black and then happily forget the white wire... Is that a good idea ??
In advance, thank you very much for your useful advice ;)

Yeah, its not a problem. The white wire is the sensor output of the fan, it imparts to your motherboard the RPM it is spinning at any given moment. The fan will work wether or not you have that third wire connected. Connecting red to red and black to black is a good idea lol :D

The white wire with the speed info from the fan, is that a 0 - 12v signal ??? the fan controller has leds to indicate if the fan is spinning, the brighter the faster it spins.... so couldn't i just connect the regulated 12v signal (red) to the white wire ??
or will that blow the leds ?

    Again, thnx in advance

Nevermind.... I took apart my fan and found that there were a soldering spot marked Y and thought, "That's probarely the fan speed feedback" and i tried to connect it to the white wire.... I didn't work!!! BUT, by accident I made the black wire (Ground) and the white wire touch... Taaa daaaaa, the little blue led went on :]
Those little buckers were zero regulated......

    Thnx for the help anyways
