Athlon 1900+xp temps vs. 2500+xp Barton temps

What kind of temps would I see from the Barton? Would it be far lower than the high temps i'm seeing now from my 1900+?

Not much lower. Eseentially the barton is the same (slightly more refined) core who gets the higher PR rating because of the additional cache, but not a whopping MHZ boost.

Well, i'm seeing a high 46 temp while browsing the internet and listening to music. I hope the barton doesn't give me these temps. I'm very disappointed. Everything I do, I can't get the temps lower. Maybe I should go to intel.

If your 1900+ is based on the old Palomino core than you are going to see significant temperature drops when switching to the Barton core. In addition to lower temps, the Barton 2500+ has a great deal of overclocking headroom and it is quite normal to see people running them at speeds of anywhere between 2-2.3 Ghz.

My Barton is stable at 46-47 C, runs like a workhorse. I don't OC, and that is 15 C above case ambient of 32 C. These Barton processors were designed for this kind of temp load.

The 2.26 GHz Intels are a tib cooler, but other tings keep the same heat load overall. The coolest INTELS actually do speed-stepping when not active, my Barton does not. I live in Florida and have no issues with my Barton. EXPECT a higher heat load with faster CPUS and those with bigger caches-- a large part of the heat is from speed pumped cache circuits in the core.

Yes, my 1900+ is based on the Palomino core. It locks up shortly after running a game. I've tried sevreral heat sinks with no luck. I have had the oppurtunity to use a Barton 2500+ with the stock amd heatsink and it ran with no problems. I played quite a few games and it never locked up. So I think I have made my decision. I'll order my Barton along with a new motherboard later this week.

The part i'm not looking forward to is rebuilding windows. :(

The palomino's run hot, but have more surface area to dissipate the heat. While the tbred cores run inherently cooler clock for clock, there's less surface area for dissipation and it basically makes cooling the same chore for both (tbreds tend to run slightly cooler, but the real benefit is the gained overlcocking headroom from the refined core... but they still get pretty hot). I know this because I tested this back when the first 1700 tbred 'A's were circulating. ;)

    Buy a Thermalright SK7 ($16) & Sunon 50CFM ($8) 80mm Fan from SVC

    Barton 2500+ (1.83ghz) @ 2.00ghz 40C Full load Temp!

    AGREED

In addition since you are running a Palomino now the Barton wil be very noticeably cooler. How's your case circulation??? And sys temps?

There are 2 temps. 22c and 34c. I'm assuming the 34c is my system temp. I only have 1 case fan. An exhaust. This is a new case. The last case I was using had an exhaust fan and an intake fan but the temps were much higher than my newer case which only uses an exhaust fan. I can't wait till the barton arrives.

The motherboard will be the top of the line Asus Nforce2 board. Right now, i'm using the ECS K7S5A.

That 34C sys temp sounds about right if you are running around 46C CPU temp. You should add at least an intake fan for better circulation.

With that board, an XP2500 Barton and a SK-7/50CFM fan you should be able to run @ 11x200=2200 (default voltages) and still be cooler than you are now.

Great news to hear. I really can't wait now. I'm placing my order today. :D

Any reason not going with the Abit NF7-S?

Not poking but just have to ask. ;)

No reason, just prefer Asus. I'll check out what differences the Asus has to the Abit and then decide.

Chech all the different forums and just look in to see what everyone has to say. I did a lot of research before buying mine and love it. There are several threads here as well as Short Media and Xtremesystems.
