Autodetect Every Boot

edited September 2003 in Hardware
My friend is having a problem with his HP. Every time his computer boots cold he needs to go into BIOS and autodetect the hard drive, save and exit, and then continue to boot. Otherwise it wont see the hard drive. If he just restarts the computer, he doesnt need to do this. Started happening after he left the computer on for 3 weeks straight, and turned it off. Begin next time he turned it back on. So he can boot, but not until he goes into bios, autodetects, saves and exits.

Specs:
Some Hp Computer, P4 I think
Samsung SV0602H
(http://www.samsung.com/Products/HardDiskDrive/SpinPointVSeries/HardDiskDrive_SpinPointVSeries_SV0602H.htm)
No pci IDE controller, uses built in mobo

So first thing that came to my mind is his CMOS battery is going shitbonkers, but it does save all other settings, including date and time. So then I had him change the IDE cable, no luck. Next I had him change the hard drive jumper from cable select to Master. By the way seeing as its the only hard drive, it is in the primary/master position. Well that didnt work either. So then I thought maybe the hard drive wasnt getting power quick enough, so I had him enable floppy seek, post and some other nonsense to slow down the BIOS a tad. Still no luck. So now Im just not sure what the fuck to do, I cant go over there and mess with it cause hes 1000 miles away. So I had him reset the cmos using the jumper on his mobo and said id call him back in a couple hours on my lunch break.

So any ideas you guys can think of in the mean time would be much appreciated. By the way, this place has changed quite a bit since I was last here. Goodness. Nice to be back though Ill see if I can get back in the swing.

the place got hacked, then auctioned on ebay lol, where you been man? anyhow, i'd have him try to replace the battery just for shits and giggles, it's the cheapest thing to replace after all. those brand name BIOSes are always crippled, but maybe there's an option to auto-detect the hard drive?

Ya thats actually how it was before it stopped working, on the auto-detect. But now it wont auto-detect, so we have to go into BIOS detect it there, and then go back and restart. Its really wierd, sounds to me like it just has a buggy bios, like you said.

Damnit, HP. Well ya I have been gone for a while, busier than ever before. I hate to come in here acting like I only say hello when I need something, but I'll make sure I apply my expertise to help out anyone I can.

I do remember it getting auctioned, and I've pretty much been gone ever since, out of the country, back again but to busy to even browse the internet. Things are calming down though, Im putting out 38 hours at work and taking 14 credits right now.

What about getting the tech specs of the HD and do a "user" entry and enter the specs manually???

Ya we did try doing it manually also, to no avail. Hes sending it in to HP, Im assuming they will slap a new bios on it or something. I think hes gonna sell it afterwords, then build his own. Allways a good decision.
